NEWS RELEASE
The Board of Defiance County Commissioners
met at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference
Room of the Board of Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance,
Ohio 43512
on Monday, January 6, 2003. Present at today’s meeting were:
Commissioners Tom Kime, Otto Nicely and Rich Cromwell, County Administrator
Becky Wagner, Clerk Alison Grimes and Deputy Clerk Joan Brown.
The beginning of today’s meeting was the Commissioner’s
Annual Reorganizational Meeting and was brought to order at 8:32 a.m. by Clerk Alison Grimes. She requested nominations for Chairman of the
Board for FY2003 and after discussion, Thomas
L. Kime was voted Chair for 2003. The
position of Vice-Chairman went to Commissioner Otto L. Nicely. Alison Grimes was reappointed Clerk, and Sherry
Carnahan, Joan Brown and Deb Bloomfield were reappointed as Deputy Clerks. Commissioner’s meetings will be held Mondays,
beginning at 8:30 a.m. and Thursdays,
from 8:30 a.m. to Noon. The morning
portion of the meetings held on the first Thursday of each month will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Hicksville Village Council
Room. Beginning this year, Commissioners will hold a
study session, if needed, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
on Wednesdays.
Also reviewed and approved during General Session was the
2003 Holiday Schedule, the 2003 Mileage Reimbursement Rate (36 cents per mile),
and the Elected Officials Generic Travel Approval for 2003.
Jane Tadsen, County
Recorder, submitted her December,
2002 report. 151 deed transfers, 508
mortgages and 522 releases were recorded during December. Total credited to the General Fund was
$36,923.00 for a year-to-date total of $386,791.80, an increase of $39,530 over
2001.
10:00 a.m. Gaylon Davis,
County Engineer,
met briefly with the Commissioners to present his weekly update. Gaylon reviewed his department’s accumulated
revenue, noting that 2002 has been his best year with a revenue total of
$3,139, 326. Permissive Tax revenue for
2002 was $424,507; Motor Vehicle/License Tax totaled $1,299,051 and Gas Tax
revenues totaled $1,387,402.
10:30 a.m. Greg Reinhart, County Wastewater
Operations Director, Bud Cereghin, who
is assisting the County, Poggemeyer Design Group engineers Otto Gerdeman and
Ken Maag, and Mark Leonard and Tom Horn from Industrial Fluid Management to
discuss the Brunersburg Sewer odor issue.
For some reason, several homes in
the Brunersburg Sewer District are experiencing sewer odor problems. Different tactics have been attempted but
have not yet eliminated the odors. The
group met to again brainstorm ideas as to why the problem is occurring and how
to correct it. After discussion, it was
decided to vent the caps to see if this corrects the problem. The
Commissioners will schedule a meeting with the homeowners to let them know what
changes are being done.
At 11:30 a.m.
Commissioners and Becky walked to the KeyBank facility for a tour of the
interior.
1:30 p.m. Susan Jackson, Defiance County Job and
Family Services Interim Director, met with the Commissioners for an update of
her department. She first presented the
completed Job and Family Services union contract for the Commissioners’
signatures and then updated the Board on various departmental activities and
the latest income/expense figures.
