DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 2005

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio  43512, on Thursday, January 20, 2004.  The meeting was called to order by Chairman Otto L. Nicely.  Also present were Commissioners Thomas L. Kime and Richard L. Cromwell; Becky Wagner, Administrator; and Joan Brown, Deputy Clerk. 

 

8:30 a.m.      General Session     

 

The Board approved the FY 2005 Special Funds Budget Appropriations in the amount of $51,140,370.69.  

 

Commissioners approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events, discussed upcoming meetings and updated information for the calendar of events.

 

The Commissioners will be attending the Township Trustees and Elected Officials annual  meeting this evening at the Public Services building. 

 

9:30 a.m.      Becky Wagner, County Administrator, reported that Effective Team Training will be conducted by Mona Weiss of Workers’ Comp on February 9th from 8:00 a.m. ‘til noon at the Public Safety Services building.   The training is for the safety committee and other interested elected officials, department heads, and employees.  The commissioners were encouraged to attend the training. 

 

She also updated the Board  on the “HOST/OHIO READS PROGRAM” involving younger elementary school children.  Volunteers are needed to go to the schools and read to children for 45 minutes one day per week.  For more information, contact Cindy Constein at 419-782-3212 or 1-800-VOLUNTEER.  

 

Sheriff Westrick stopped in to inform the Board that a $20,000 grant was received to place video cameras in ten of the sheriff’s cruisers. 

 

 

10:30 a.m.    Randy Vogel, County Dog Warden, met with the Board to review his department’s 2004 yearly report.   During 2004, the department responded to 1,520 complaints, issued 290 citations with 172 being court citations and 89 being for dogs running at large.  Also, he reported that 437 dogs were taken to the shelter. 

 

Dog license for 2005 will be on sale through January 31.  Door-to-door license checks will begin this spring.   

 

 

11:00 a.m.    Jerry Hayes, Economic Development Director; Chip Holcomb, CIC consultant; and Paul Murcko representing the UAW  held an informational meeting with the Board concerning the County Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) and the Automotive Community Improvement Program.   The Board encouraged the UAW to financially contribute to the campaign for the CIC program, an integral part of building a community. 

 

 

The Board reviewed a report from Teresa Johnson, 4-H Educator, that 34 high school age 4-H camp counselors met at Girl Scout Camp Libbey for an overnight lock-in.  Ten adult volunteers were on hand to guide the youth through a series of hands on interview stations.  Counselors also set a goal of recruiting 175 campers for 4-H camp and chose a theme of “Cowboy Up.”
