NEWS RELEASE

DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 2010

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 04, 2010 in the Hicksville Village Council Room, Hicksville, Ohio.  Chairman James E. Harris, Jr. called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioner Otto L. Nicely, Laura Howell, Administrator, Stephanie Metz, Clerk, and Lanie Miller, Deputy Clerk.

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents.  The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

Laura Howell, Administrator, met with the Commissioners and presented her report to the Commissioners.  Laura provided the following Department Updates:

Wastewater Operations:  Greg Reinhart met with an Ohio EPA representative and inspected all plants.  There were no major problems found.

Dog Warden:  Randy Vogel report that last week, he handled 27 complaints-3 humane calls, the rest were dogs running at large.

Laura also informed the Board that the 2010 census questionnaires are being delivered March 15-17, 2010.  Constituents must complete and mail back their census forms between March 15 and April 15, 2010.  The questionnaire is one of the shortest in history—just ten questions that only take about ten minutes to complete.  Everyone in the United States must be counted, and census workers will visit households that do not return forms to take the count in person.  By mailing back the form, citizens reduce the cost of the census by reducing the number of census workers who must go door-to-door to collect data.  The stakes are high; an accurate count of the local population helps to ensure Defiance County constituents receive their fair share of federal funding.  This includes resources for services such as health care, education and roads.  The census also determines the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.  It also determines the boundaries for state and local legislative and congressional districts.  By law, the Census Bureau cannot share an individual’s responses with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities.

Steve Flickinger and Linda Maag, State Auditors, met with the Board of Commissioners and the Audit Committee for an Entrance Audit Meeting.
