DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio  43512 on Thursday, March 10, 2005.  The meeting was called to order by Chairman Otto L. Nicely.  Also present were Commissioners Thomas L. Kime and Richard L. Cromwell; Becky Wagner, Administrator; Alison Grimes, Clerk and Joan Brown, Deputy Clerk.      

 

 

8:30 a.m.      General Session      Commissioners approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events, discussed upcoming meetings and updated information for the calendar of events.

 

Commissioner Nicely, on behalf of the Board, signed the contract documents for the renovation of Defiance County-East.  Work is expected to begin immediately.  Mel Lanzer Construction won the General Contractor’s bid for the work.

 

 

9:30 a.m.      Tim Houck, Landfill Manager, presented his monthly update to the Board.  He reviewed his revenue and expenses report and noted that February’s revenue was higher than previous years. 

 

The Landfill’s Annual Report to the EPA is nearing completion and will be submitted by April 1.

 

Tim was asked to set up a meeting with the Board and Eagon and Associates, the Landfill’s hydrogeologic consultants, for an update.

 

The Landfill was inspected by the OEPA in February and found no violations.  This is the second month in a row that the Landfill received no violations.

 

Environmental Program - 

 

The annual Litter Recognition Breakfast is scheduled for Friday, April 29, 2005 at Defiance College. 

 

During March and April, 855 second- and fourth-grade students will see a litter presentation and receive items promoting litter prevention and recycling:  litter bags, pencils, activity books, brochures and rulers.

 

The month of June will be the annual “Maumee River Shoreline Sweep” where volunteers assist in cleaning the riverbanks.  Please call the Environmental Services office at 419.784.5442 of you wish to volunteer or need more information.  

 

So far this year, the road collection crew has cleaned 20 miles of roads of litter – the grant goal is 905 miles.  They are a little behind schedule, but will catch up when the weather improves.

 

The next Four County Solid Waste District meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 25, 1:30 p.m. at Paulding County Commissioners’ office.

 

 

 

 

10:30 a.m.    Tina Hiler, Senior Services Center, met with the Board for an informational meeting regarding several items.  They discussed the Area Office on Aging’s request that the Senior Services hire a registered nurse to assist with the Nutrition Grant plus act as staff nurse.  The position would be for 10 to 14 hours per week and fulfills a compliance issue.  Tina noted that she can request a change in the Area Office on Aging’s budget to include a portion of the cost of the nurse be included in the Nutrition budget.  After reviewing the Center’s budget, her request for the R.N. was approved. 

 

Next, vehicle inventory was reviewed.  One of the Hot Shot meal delivery vehicles, which has logged over 133,355 miles, needs to be replaced.  Tina will compile a specifications list to be sent to appropriate distributors.

 

Finally, the Board discussed the possibility of putting a replacement levy for the Senior Services Center on the November ballot.  This discussion will be continued.
