DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 18, 2010 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Chairman James E. Harris, Jr. called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioners Thomas L. Kime and Otto L. Nicely, Laura Howell, Administrator, Stephanie Metz, Clerk, and Lanie Miller, Deputy Clerk. 

 

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents.  The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

 

Laura Howell, Administrator, met with the Commissioners and presented her report to the Commissioners.  Laura provided the following statistics for Defiance County’s website:  2009 produced 55,655 page loads, 42,925 unique visitors and 19,364 returning visitors. Unique visitors are individual people – first time visitors are all unique visitors. By having more unique visitors that returning visitors, it means the website is growing in popularity and use. Other interesting facts include:

·         48% of visitors are still using Internet Explorer 7 or 8;

·         An overwhelming majority use Windows XP or Vista;

·         65% still use a screen size smaller than 1280 x 1024 (which is now standard);

·         80% search for the term “defiance county ohio” and usually from Google;

·         Most enter on the main page;

·         Most live in the counties surrounding Defiance. Two hits from the UK.

 

Laura also provided some interesting facts obtained from the Agricultural Appreciation and Farmer’s Share Breakfast.  Defiance County has 264,960 acres and of those acres, 233,000 are agricultural. Total Defiance County agricultural receipts were $103,900,000 in 2008: 79% crop and 21% livestock. They are still collecting data for 2009. Soy beans are the highest commodity crop in Defiance County. Of livestock production, dairy and milk is the highest commodity at $16,390,000.

 

Randy Vogel, Defiance County Dog Warden, met with the Commissioners to provide his monthly update.  Randy reported the following statistics for the month of February 2010:  71 calls investigated, 11 dogs taken to the shelter, 154 personal contacts, 14 warnings issued, 6 court citations, drove 1,690 miles, and collected $675.50 in Municipal Court Fines.

 

JoAnn Norris and Amy Galbraith, Clerk of Courts, met with the Commissioners to volunteer to set up a Defiance County Relay for Life team for Defiance County employees.  The Commissioners’ office will support the Defiance County Team and will help promote Relay for Life in County Offices.

 

The Commissioners attended the CIC Annual Meeting at the Eagles.
