DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

THURSDAY, APRIL 6, 2006

 

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. in the Hicksville Village Council Room, Hicksville, Ohio on Thursday, April 6, 2006.  The meeting was called to order by Chairman Thomas L. Kime.  Also present were Commissioner Otto L. Nicely; Becky Wagner, County Administrator, and Lyla Gurwell, Clerk. 

 

General Session – General Session - The Commissioners were presented with various resolutions and documents for approval.  Commissioners also reviewed agenda items, discussed upcoming meetings and reviewed and updated the calendar of events.

 

Commissioner Kime signed several contracts for the Engineer’s Office.  Those signed were the 2006 Crack Seal, 2006 Paving of Various Roads, 2006 LTIP Paving, and 2006 Bridge Materials

 

Jane Tadsen, Defiance County Recorder submitted her March report to the Commissioners.  Jane reported during the month of March, the total instruments were as follows:  Deeds recorded were 240, Mortgages recorded were 290.  Jane also recorded 224 Releases, 1 Lease, 1 Partnership, 6 Power of Attorneys, 2 Soldier Discharges and 3 Plats.  Additionally, the total for the month of March was $40,121.25 of which $19,841.50 went into the Housing Trust and $20,279.75 went into the General Fund.

 

Becky Wagner, County Administrator, submitted her report to the Commissioners.  Becky advised the Commissioners that the County Employee Fitness center is on target to open soon. 

 

Becky also discussed installing a TTY communication system in the Commissioners Office.  This will allow the hearing impaired to communicate with the county.  When the system is installed, Becky will generate an ad for news release informing the public of the system along with the telephone number.

 

Becky also mentioned that she attended the Senior Center Advisory Board meeting this past Monday evening.  Becky said they worked on the Senior Center Mission Statement. Tina Hiler advised Becky of their goals and objectives. 

 

Tina Mohring from Family & Children First & Heather Huffman from Help Me Grow, Tina Mohring, Director of Family & Children First discussed the ABC Initiative (Access to Better Care) and mentioned they did not receive the additional grant dollars for the ABC Initiative.  Their board met and was able to formulate a plan that will still allow the main points of both plans to be funded.  In Defiance County, they will soon have Family Systems Therapy available to county families.  This is based on research that shows that it keep children from being placed outside of the home.  The target will be families involved in Children’s Services and Juvenile Court.

 

Tina also discussed the Wrap Around program.  Currently there are 11 families (20 Children) involved in the Wrap Around program.  This program allows training in our 5-County Area.  The Wrap Around program enables families to utilize the necessary recourses to get their family back together. 

 

 

 

 

Tina also mentioned Defiance is one of 5 Counties awarded a Partnerships for Success grant which begins July 1, 2006. 

 

Also a topic of discussion was the “Get Connected, Get Answers training that will begin on May 12th at the EMA in Brunersburg.  This training will allow Defiance County Agencies to gain knowledge of where to refer people for the most common needs to the most unusual ones.  It will be a quick reference tool that will allow an opportunity to network and learn from similar professional organizations about where to direct the particular client.

 

Heather Huffman, Director of Help Me Grow advised the Commissioners about the Early Childhood Screenings. They were a huge success this year.  They screened children from birth to age three and had more kids this year than in the past 13 years.  They screened 47 kids in Hicksville and 92 kids in Defiance in just 2 ˝ days.

 

Heather also mentioned it is National Child Abuse Prevention month.  Help Me Grow  will have a display at the Defiance Mall on April 21, 2006 for the Children’s Day event sponsored by Women and Family Services
