NEWS RELEASE

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio  43512 on Monday, April 14, 2003.  The meeting was called to order by Thomas Kime, Chairman.  Present were Commissioners Thomas L. Kime, Otto L. Nicely and Richard L. Cromwell.  Also present was Alison Grimes, Clerk. and Joan Brown, Deputy Clerk.   

 

8:30 a.m.        General Session – Commissioners approved and signed various resolutions and documents, approved a travel request, reviewed and signed the voucher report , reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events, discussed upcoming meetings and updated information for the calendar of events.   

 

10:00 a.m.      Gaylon Davis, County Engineer, met with the Board to open bids for 2003 Bridge Materials.  Also present for the bid opening were:  Paul Rice, St. Regis Culvert, Inc.; John Wooddell, Oldham, Inc.; Dick Thompson, Contech; and Jeff Swan, Independent Concrete Pipe.

 

The following bridges have been earmarked for reconstruction/improvements during 2003:

Commissioners accepted the bids as presented for further review.  Mr. Davis will review the bids and submit a recommendation by next week.

 

Gaylon then submitted his request to award the Bend Road Project to Fort Defiance Construction/C.J. Mahan in the amount of $1,865,829.72.   The submitted bids are listed below.

Commissioners approved the award, pending contract review and approval from the Prosecutor’s office.  The project is slated to begin April 28. 

 

10:30 a.m.      Otto Gerdeman, Merlin Butler and Ken Maag, Poggemeyer Design Group, met with the Board for a projects update.  Greg Reinhart, County Wastewater Operations, also attended.  Sherry Carnahan, Deputy Clerk, replaced Joan Brown during this meeting.   At 10:35 a.m., the Board entered EXECUTIVE SESSION to discuss the Purchase of Property (ORC 121.22 (G) (2) ) regarding the Auglaize River Sewer project.  EXECUTIVE SESSION ended at 10:47 a.m.  Mr. Butler will keep the Commissioners apprised of easement negotiations. 

 

Christi Meadows Wastewater Treatment Plant Closure– waiting for EPA permits.  Construction is still on schedule; Ken is working with the contractor to search for quotes for a generator.

 

Evansport – a pre-construction meeting will be scheduled by Poggemeyer for next week.

 

Indian Bridge Lane – permit applications have been submitted to the EPA.  Waiting for the environmental report from Dennis Miller of Maumee Valley Planning. 

 

Christi Meadows Sewer I & I – Phase 2 has begun. 

 

1:30 p.m.        Jerry Hayes, Economic Development Office, presented a Enterprise Zone Agreement to the Commissioners.  Parker-Hannefin, formerly known as Commercial Intertech, Hicksville, is applying for a 100% tax exemption for a period of 10 years.  The facility is planning to invest a total of $9,700,000 in machinery, equipment and inventory.  35 full-time, permanent jobs will be created by this expansion resulting in $1,000,000 in payroll.  The project is scheduled to begin April 2003 and conclude by March, 2006.
