DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512 on Monday, May 1, 2006.  Co-Chairman, Commissioner’s Richard Cromwell called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioner Otto Nicely, County Administrator Becky Wagner, Clerk Lyla Gurwell, and Deputy Clerk Joanne Goerlitz.

 

General Session – General Session - The Commissioners were presented with various resolutions and documents for approval.  Commissioners also reviewed agenda items, discussed upcoming meetings and reviewed and updated the calendar of events.

 

The Commissioners passed a resolution to support the Defiance Public Library ballot issue.  With voter approval, the levy will help generate funds that will be used to better the library for the community’s use by improving children’s services, improving technology, increase materials and expand operating hours.

 

The Defiance County Engineer, Warren Schlatter came in for his weekly update.  Warren discussed the Elliott Road project.  Warren mentioned they are currently testing the soil for compaction.  Current conditions are substantially dryer than what they anticipated.

 

Also, Warren mentioned his office continues to work on the plans for the West High Canoe Launch.

 

Warren also discussed the replacement of the Glenburg Road Bridge which was damaged last year from overweight vehicles attempting to cross the bridge.  Warren said the beams for the bridge will be delivered in approximately two (2) weeks.  The Highway crew will begin pulling off the damaged bridge materials and prepare for replacement.

 

The Defiance County Environmental Director, Tim Houck came in for his monthly update.

 

Tim discussed his workers picking up the deer that have been hit and left on the sides of the roads and disposing of them at the landfill.  Tim as well as the Commissioners questioned whose responsibility it is or who’s responsibility it should be to collect them.  Tim reported Environmental Services has been doing this job for a number of years now.  No decisions were made at this time, but the Commissioners will have further discussion as to who they would prefer to handle this matter.

 

Tim reported March was a record month for annual sales as compared to previous years.

 

Annual tons for the month of March were 9,552 for a year to date of 27,365.  Annual cubic yard totals to date are at 71,278.

 

Tim also submitted his report for compacted Vs loose cubic yards.  Year-to-date compacted are at 47,639, year-to-date loose is at 23,639.

 

The leachate monthly gallon total for the month of March is at 69,840 as compared to 485,280 gallons for the month of March in 2005.  Tim indicated the reason for the drop is not only the lack of rain, but there are no open cells.

 

Tim also reported the Hicksville Transfer Station collected $1,895 year to date and is now open twice per month.
