DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512 on Thursday, May 4, 2006.  Chairman Thomas L. Kime called the meeting to order.   Also present were Commissioner’s Richard Cromwell, & Otto Nicely, County Administrator Becky Wagner, Clerk Lyla Gurwell, and Deputy Clerk Joanne Goerlitz.

 

General Session – The Commissioners were presented with various resolutions and documents for approval.  Commissioners also reviewed agenda items, discussed upcoming meeting and reviewed and updated the calendar of events.

Becky indicated the Defiance County Engineer, Warren Schlatter submitted the plan for the canoe launch site on West High.  Warren needs the Board of Commissioners to review and approve the plan so that it canoe sent to the state.

 

There was additional discussion on the matter of deer carcass removal.  As previously reported, Environmental Services personnel have removed the carcasses from the roadways for a number of years.  The Commissioners discussed the possibility of billing the appropriate county entity for the disposal of the carcasses according to where the deer were found.

 

Becky asked the Board of Commissioners if they would have a problem with the walking trail being utilized for the Healthy Ohioans walk on May 17th at noon.  Mercy Hospital is providing 100 box lunches for the walkers along with bottled water.  It is in conjunction with the Governors challenge for Ohioans to collectively walk one million miles that day.

 

Becky mentioned the walking path at Defiance County East has been very well received by the community.  The Commissioners discussed the future expansion of the walking path to extend into the wooded area.  The Commissioners discussed the possible placement of a bridge that would facilitate crossing the river and go into a more scenic area.  The Commissioners will revisit the area and decide the location of the bridge at a later date.

 

The Commissioners met with Tim Houck, Director of Environmental Services along with Eastman & Smith & Mannik & Smith representatives to further discuss the progress of the landfill expansion.  The project is progressing as planned based on discussions during the March 9, 2006 meeting.  A conference call was made to Beth Brown of Eagon & Associates to join in the discussion.

 

Also, discussed was the bid documents and bid process will take approximately sixty (60) days after the bids are submitted.  The Commissioners want to make sure that everyone involved are doing what needs to be done to accomplish a January bid date.  The Commissioners want to be consistently updated on the progress of obtaining the necessary permits as well as being updated on the results of the tests that have been done on the ground water and various other rests that need to be submitted for permitting purposes.

 

Tim Mentioned that his crew is working extremely hard at compaction at the landfill.  Tim also stated during this process, they did locate at least two months of additional airspace for waste.
