DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

MONDAY, MAY 5, 2008

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2008 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Vice-Chairman James E. Harris, Jr. called the meeting to order. Also present were Commissioner Otto L. Nicely, Laura Howell, County Administrator, Cara Brown, Clerk, and Joanne Goerlitz, Deputy Clerk.

 

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

 

Jane Tasden, Recorded, reported that during the month of April, 2008, following instruments were recorded: 136 Deeds, 262 Mortgages, 264 Releases, and 8 Power of Attorney’s. The total of the month of April, 2008 was $29,946.25 of which $14,686.00 for the Housing Trust Fund and $15,260.25 for the General Fund.

 

Warren Schlatter, Defiance County Engineer, met with the Commissioners for his weekly update. Warren advised that Beerbower Rd. west of Ridenour Rd. is still closed for a bridge replacement. He is expecting this closure to last about another 2 weeks. Warren also submitted his monthly revenue report. For the month of April, $38,683.31 was collected in Permissive Tax, $116,584.37 in Motor Vehicle/License Tax, $191,154.93 in Gas Tax and $2,155.87 in Court Fines.

 

Warren Schlatter, County Engineer, Eric Ludwig, Cooper Farms, Bud Koenig, Cooper Farms, Dennis Miller, Maumee Valley Planning, Phil Snider, Maumee Valley Planning, Isaac Lee, Economic Development, and Vernon Haase, Larry Hartman, Richard Polter, Mark Township Trustees, met with the Commissioners to discuss the Mark Township roads that may be affected by the Cooper’s proposed hog facility. Dennis advised that there may be funds available to help improve these roads. Some of the possible sources of funding may be CDBG, LTIP, Issue II, Job Creation money, and additional State funding.

 

Eric Ludwig, Director of Corporate Development & Purchasing, advised that as of right now, the proposed facility has been put on hold due to increasing prices, specifically corn. At this moment, no future date has been set for them to begin construction. Dennis advised Eric and Bud, that Maumee Valley Planning will need approximately 30-90 days to submit an application for funding before Coopers can begin construction.

 

Julie Rittenhouse, Public Safety Director, met with the Commissioners to provide an update. Julie advised that for FY2008 the Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) has been allocated $44,665.00. Julie also provided an update on the County’s Workers Compensation Premium and Defensive Driving.

 

Tina Hiler, Senior Services Director, met with the Commissioners to provide an update. Tina advised that the Senior Prom is scheduled for Thursday, May 15th at the Defiance Eagles. The Senior Center will be closed on June 9, 2008 to allow the staff to attend training. Senior Services will also be hosting an Ice Cream Social at the UAW Park on Thursday, August 7th. Tina gave an overview of the legislative breakfast she attended a few weeks ago at Sylvania Senior Center.
