DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

MONDAY, MAY 9, 2005

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio  43512 on Monday, May 9, 2005.  The meeting was called to order by Chairman Otto L. Nicely.  Also present were Commissioners Thomas L. Kime and Richard L. Cromwell; Becky Wagner, Administrator; Alison Grimes, Clerk and Joan Brown, Deputy Clerk. 

 

 

8:30 a.m.      Russ Herman, County Assistant Prosecutor, met with the Board to review the status of various documents pending his review/opinion.  Currently, Mr. Herman is up-to-date on county documents.

 

 

9:00 a.m.      General Session      Commissioners approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events, discussed upcoming meetings and updated information for the calendar of events.

 

On behalf of the Board, Commissioner Nicely signed the Engineer’s paperwork regarding the Bend Road Project.  George Gradel Company, Toledo, was awarded the bid.  Estimated at $1,222,983.80, the bid came in at $1,179,321.95 and is scheduled to begin by May 16.

 

 

10:00 a.m.    Warren Schlatter, County Engineer, presented his weekly update.  He submitted his accumulated revenue report which includes permissive tax, motor vehicle/license tax, gas tax and court fines for the month of April.  Total accumulated revenue for 2005 is $1,214,125 versus $1,075,751 for April, 2004. 

 

Carpenter Road bridge is now open to traffic, but may be closed intermittently for finishing work.  The Ney/Williams Center Road bridge, south of the County Line, will be closed shortly and will be closed for the next three weeks.

 

Warren also noted that county paving of various roads and crack sealing is progressing.

 

 

10:30 a.m.    Mark Hopper, Public Safety Services Director and Russ Herman, Assistant Prosecutor, who were scheduled to discuss the County’s driver policy, was rescheduled for Monday, May 16. 

 

 

11:00 a.m.    Mark Newman, Defiance Community (DCTV) Television Director, scheduled to meet with the Board at this time with an update, called to cancel due to other commitments.  He will call and reschedule for another time.    

 

 

1:30 p.m.      Tina Hiler, Robin Justus, Sue Moninger and Ginny Wiseman, Senior Services Center, met with the Board for an update of activities.  Tina reviewed the funding awards

 

 

 

 

 

received from the Area Office on Aging for 2005 and obtained Commissioner Nicely’s signature on the contract documents.  The Center will receive funding for the following:  Non-Nutrition: $82,487.54; Nutrition: $259,044.00.  It was noted that funding for 2006 will decrease.

 

Robin updated the Board on vehicle inventory/use/repair.  One vehicle is currently out-of-service due to a leaking manifold.  She also noted that, due to the increase in gas prices, their fuel expense line has increased accordingly.    

 

231 seniors attended the recent Senior Prom held Thursday, April 21.  138 of the 231 were first-time prom-goers.

 

As of April, 2005, the Senior Services Center performed 3,724 congregate meals and 23,416 home-delivered meals.  Their vehicles logged an average of 16,186 miles per month either delivering meals, transporting seniors to medical appointments and/or shopping.

 

Ginny Wiseman submitted quotes and a lease price for a dishwashing unit for the Center.   Only certain models were priced as they have limited space for the unit.  Pricing ranged from $5,000 to $8,500; a unit could be leased for $140 per month.   With a leased unit, if the Center needed to move, the unit could be moved with them.
