The regular meeting of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners was called to order at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2002, in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio  43512 by Chairman Otto L. Nicely.

8:00 a.m.        Russ Herman, Defiance County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, met with the Commissioners to review various documents currently pending his approval. 

 

 

 

 

8:30 a.m.        General Session

 

Ron Mehring, Job and Family Services Director, submitted a letter of retirement to the Commissioners.  His last date of service will be August 15, 2002.  July 1, 2002 will mark 33 years of employment with the Department of Jobs and Family Services (formerly Human Services and, before that, Welfare Department).  For the last 25 years, Mr. Mehring worked in the Defiance branch.

9:30 a.m.        Gaylon Davis, County Engineer, met with the Commissioners with his weekly update.   Larry Yoder also attended the session and spoke to the Commissioners regarding the JEDD Agreement and the use of the sewer system if the area is developed for commercial or warehousing use in an area to be designated as a foreign trade zone.  Commissioners will forward sewer and water rates to him.

 

Gaylon also reviewed the drainage work being completed at the Fairgrounds.  He requested approval for the replacement of a bridge on Flory Road, .42 miles west of Christy Road.

Mr. Davis also submitted information from the Ohio Department of Transportation whereby political subdivisions may participate in the purchase of sodium chloride (rock salt).  A participation agreement in the form of a resolution was passed and will be sent to ODOT.

10:00 a.m.      Linda Maag, Auditor-in-Charge, Steve Flickinger and Rob Giesige, State Auditor’s office, met with the Commissioners, Karen Tubbs, County Treasurer, Jill Little, Sharon Scheuerman, Barb Lasek, Auditor’s office, Mary Ritter and Stan Searing, Workforce Development and Gaylon Davis, County Engineer, to present information concerning the exit audit.  EXECUTIVE SESSION was requested to discuss Confidential Matters (ORC 121.22 (G)(5)).

11:26 a.m.      Jim Harris, Soil and Water Conservation District Administrator, met with the Commissioners to open bids for a ditch maintenance truck.  Wes Moats, representing Mark Moats Ford and Clarence Zimmerman, representing Bryan Ford, were also in attendance.  Bids were received from the following:

1:30 p.m.        Mark Hopper, Public Safety Services Coordinator, Tom Carabin, CORSA (County Risk Sharing Authority) representative and Lavon Speiser, Judy Butler and Mel Hoch, representing Auglaize Village, met with the Commissioners to discuss the recent CORSA inspection.   Mr. Carabin inspected the Village buildings and grounds in April and found various safety hazards.  Although it is an historical setting, current safety regulations must be followed.  The Village meets this Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. and one or two of the Commissioners and the Safety Services Coordinator will attend to discuss the safety issues with the rest of the Auglaize Village board. 

 

Auglaize Village relies on volunteers for maintenance and to run the different functions, but over the past few years, the number of volunteers has dwindled.
