DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512 on Thursday, June 15, 2006.  Chairman Thomas L. Kime called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioner’s Richard L. Cromwell, Otto Nicely, Clerk Lyla Gurwell, and Deputy Clerk Joanne Goerlitz.

 

General Session – The Commissioners were presented with various resolutions and documents for approval.  Commissioners also reviewed agenda items, discussed upcoming meetings and reviewed and updated the calendar of events.

 

Defiance County Administrator Becky Wagner presented her report to the Board. 

 

Becky reported she received a request from Four County Career Center regarding the Workforce Investment Act Youth Program.  They requested that the Commissioners consider participating in the program by allowing a student to shadow one or two of our employees.  The Commissioners agreed to participate in the program.

 

Becky also reported on the Health Department.  They recently held their pandemic meeting and presented a video on the impact of a pandemic.  Kim Moss, the Director asked to put a core group of people together representing local government agencies such as hospitals, schools, law enforcement, and fire/rescue.

 

Randy Vogel, Defiance County Dog Warden came in to update the Commissioners.

 

Randy reported dog license sales were up.  7,000 dog tags were sold requiring him to order additional tags.

 

Randy reported his office received 142 complaints.  Dog bites are up this spring; currently at 7.  Dogs running at large are at 67 for the month of May.

 

The number of dogs taken to the shelter for the month of May was at 38, the number of warnings written was 24 and the number of citations given was at 22.

 

Randy reported the miles driven for the month of May were at 2,682 and stated he made one trip to the landfill and disposed of 640 pounds of euthanized animals. 

 

The Four County Joint Board (Defiance, Fulton, Henry and Williams Counties) met regarding the appointment of a representative to the Advisory Board of Northwest Ohio Juvenile Detention, Training and Rehabilitation Center.  Scott Acus was appointed to a five year term on the board of Trustees effective May 1, 2006 through April 30, 2010.

 

The Commissioners also met with Williams County regarding the Lick Creek and Little Lick Creek project.  Dennis Bell, Engineer for Williams County presented the project overview which included general project information, an overall watershed map and preliminary cost estimate $1,798,642.33, and photographs of the sections involved. 

 

In 2005 a joint board of county commissioners was formed to proceed with this project.  In March of 2005, the joint board of county commissioners authorized Dennis Bell to proceed with preliminary engineering at a cost of approximately $28,000.  The cost to date including inspections and report compilation is approximately $4,000.

 

The length of Lick Creek is approximately 122,440 feet or 23.1 miles.  The project length in Defiance County is approximately 11.9 miles and the project length in Williams County is approximately 11.2 miles.  Little Lick Creek, in Defiance County is approximately 7.7 miles long.
