The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30
a.m. on Thursday, June 24, 2010 in the Hicksville Village Council Room,
Hicksville, Ohio. Vice-Chairman James E. Harris,
Jr. called the meeting to
order. Also present were Commissioners Thomas L.
Kime and Otto L. Nicely, Laura Howell, Administrator, Stephanie Metz, Clerk, and
Lanie Miller, Deputy Clerk.
The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed
various resolutions, contracts and documents.
The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed
upcoming meetings.
The Commissioners received a concern from a citizen regarding the
railroad crossing on SR 281 between US 24 and Elliott Road. The Commissioners were able to discuss this
with Spence Wendlin, M & W representative.
Mr. Wendlin informed the Board that the repairs will begin possibly as
soon as June 25th, weather permitting.
Laura Howell,
Administrator, provided her weekly update to the Board. Laura reported that we received six responses
to the Request for Qualifications for the Grandstand Project. They were received by Poggemeyer Design
Group, URS, Feller, Fitch & Associates, Inc., Beilharz Architects, Inc.,
TFC Architects and Engineers, and WDC Group.
Laura provided the
following department updates:
Maintenance: Ron
Cereghin reported that maintenance is mulching at Evergreen Lane, an air
conditioning unit was repaired and a tempering valve on a water heater was replaced
at DCE.
Public
Safety: Julie Rittenhouse reported that Paula did the Extremely hazardous
Substance Facility Survey at the Ney Water Treatment Plant.
Tim Houck, Defiance County Landfill, met
with the Commissioners for an update.
Tim reported that he provided trash barrels at the Penney Nature Center,
Auglaize Village and Kingsbury Park. The
school recycling program will resume in late August for the 2010-2011 school
year. The County road crew has picked up
litter on 514 miles of roadway for a monthly average of 89 miles. Tim reported $216,081.43 in sales and 22,817
cubic yards/6,948.54 tons collected for the month of May; compared to
$226,641.27 in sales and 24,061 cubic yards/7,763.47 tons collected for May of
2009.
The Commissioners
met with Humane Society Board members and Teresa Johnson, OSU Extension, to
discuss services that OSU Extension may be able to provide to the Humane
Society regarding board organization and management. Nancy Porter informed the Board that the 7th
Annual Golf Outing will be held on July 24, 2010 at the Auglaize Golf Course
with a 1:00 pm shotgun start. She also
informed the Board that thanks to Jack Ewan, Sr.’s bequest, they will be able
to construct a roof over the entire recreational area.
The Commissioners
attended the 50th Anniversary Open House for Maumee Valley Guidance
Center.
