OPENING:    

 

The regular meeting of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners was called to order at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2002, in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio  43512 by Chairman Otto L. Nicely.

The minutes of the June 20, 2002 meeting were reviewed and unanimously approved as read.

C.                OPEN ISSUES/DISCUSSION

 

Commissioners discussed the ruling the federal appeals court in San Francisco made regarding the deletion of “ one nation under God,…” from the Pledge of Allegiance.   The Board is against the removal of that phrase and passed a resolution so stating.

D.        APPOINTMENTS

 

8:30 a.m.        General Session

 

 

9:30 a.m.        Becky Wagner, County Administrator, presented her weekly update at this time.   She informed the Commissioners that Tim Houck, Environmental Services Director, reported the 48 participants showed up to assist during the Maumee River Shoreline Sweep this past weekend. 

 

She reviewed, and Commissioners approved, a draft of a letter which will be sent to all elected officials, department heads and supervisors regarding the establishment of a county employee safety committee. 

 

Becky reported that Marge McCurdy received three estimates for landscaping at the east end of the Sheriff’s office:

 

                        Ed Perry Excavating                         $1,250.00

                        John Schaufele                                              $1,125.00

ColorScapes                                                 $   694.30 (does not include drain tile as the owner feels his plan will work without drain tile)

 

 

Before making a decision, Commissioners requested Becky get a quote from ColorScapes which would include drain tile.

 

The final draft of the County’s Personnel Manual was also briefly reviewed.  A meeting will be set to complete any changes and approve the manual. 

 

10:30 a.m.      The Williams County Commissioners, Marvin Stuckey, Duane Votaw and Tom Strup, met with the Commissioners and Jim Harris, Defiance County Soil and Water Conservation District Administrator, regarding joint ditches.  The group first elected a Chair and Vice-Chair for the Joint Ditch Board.  Marvin Stuckey, Williams County was elected as Chair and Otto Nicely, Defiance County, was elected as Vice-Chair.

The group also briefly reviewed information concerning the lease of the One-Stop facility on East Second Street. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1:00 p.m.        Commissioners attended a Planning Commission meeting at Maumee Valley Planning.  They reviewed Subdivision Regulations, Article 8, 9 and 10.  They will continue to review and update the regulations.
