NEWS RELEASE

DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

THURSDAY, JULY 1, 2010

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 1, 2010 in the Hicksville Village Council Room, Hicksville, Ohio.  Chairman James E. Harris, Jr. called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioners Otto L. Nicely and Thomas L. Kime, Laura Howell, Administrator, Stephanie Metz, Clerk, and Lanie Miller, Deputy Clerk.

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents.  The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

The Commissioners approved Submitting to the Electors of Defiance County Pursuant to R.C. § 5705.19 the Question of a Replacement of 1.2 Mill Tax Levy for the Purpose of Providing or Maintaining Senior Citizens Services or Facilities as Authorized by R.C.§ 307.694, 307.85, 505.70, 505.706, or 717.01(EE).

The Commissioners met with Hicksville Mayor Haver, Kent Miller, Village Administrator, and Jeff Ankney, Defiance County Soil & Water, to discuss a grant application for a retention pond for the Village.  The involved parties will continue to work on this application.

Laura Howell, Defiance County Administrator, met with the Commissioners for her weekly report and project updates.  Laura informed the Board that both contractors for the Auglaize Sewer project should be starting around July 19, 2010, weather permitting.  This date was delayed due to inclement weather.  Underground Utilities plan to start on the east side of the river on the south end (Power Dam Rd).

The Joint Board of Commissioners of Defiance and Williams Counties attempted to have a Special meeting of the Lick Creek  & Little Lick Creek Ditch Project for payment of legal and advertising bills and appropriations of additional funds to pay ongoing legal expenses for the Joint Board.  Joint Board members Brian Davis, Lewis Hilkert and Al Word failed to attend a Joint Board Meeting for the second time.  There was no quorum, therefore the Special Meeting could not be held.

Mr. Kime met with the public afterwords and reviewed the current financials on the Project.  Mr. Kime stated that because of these costly actions, the Defiance County Commissioners approved hiring the firm of Isaac, Brant, Ledman & Teetor, LLP. to represent Defiance County Commissioners and the Defiance County taxpayers in the Lick Creek Project watershed and for the public good of all citizens of Defiance County.
