NEWS RELEASE

 

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio  43512 on Monday, July 14, 2003.  The meeting was called to order by Thomas Kime, Chairman.  Present were Commissioners Thomas L. Kime, Otto L. Nicely and Richard L. Cromwell.  Also present was Becky Wagner, Administrator, and Alison Grimes, Clerk.     

 

 

8:30 a.m.        General Session – Commissioners approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events, discussed upcoming meetings and updated information for the calendar of events. 

 

Commissioners received word that the county received an increase in the FY03 Emergency Management Performance Grant.  The original award was in the amount of $19,400; the new award amount is $27,629.  The EMP Grant is the 50% reimbursement grant that is used for day-to-day emergency management activities.

 

The Board discussed other avenues of funding for log jam removal.  A letter will be generated to Conrad Cape (he met with the Commissioners on Monday) noting their ideas.

 

Jim Volkert, from the Fair Board, stopped in and dropped off a check in the amount of $9,354.36 as partial payment toward the Fairgrounds Beef Barn project. 

 

 

9:50 a.m.        Becky Wagner, Administrator and Randy Vogel, Humane Agent, met with the Board under EXECUTIVE SESSION regarding Hiring of Personnel (ORC 121.22 (G) (1) ).

 

EXECUTIVE SESSION ended at 10:07 a.m.  After discussion, the Board recommended the hiring of Mike Zipfel as Assistant Dog Warden, pending results of the pre-employment screening.

 

 

10:40 a.m.      Tim Houck, Landfill Manager, presented his update for the Board.

 

Tim has several upcoming seminars:

 

            July 21            Ohio Association for Litter Prevention and Recycling Professionals, Dayton

 

            August 14       Ohio Solid Waste District Work Group, Columbus

 

Various work orders are ongoing at the Landfill – final cover, air permit, explosive gas, borrow area, soil samples and the wetlands permitting, just to name a few.  The woods removal project is completed; his office is just waiting for the bill.  Also, the farm contract with Andy Shininger is completed. 

 

 

 

 

 

Tim informed the Board that the air compressor at the Landfill has died.  He had been renting one from Bil-Jax for $1,000 per month, but the rental contract is due to expire.  He submitted quotes for a new compressor from the following:

 

            Bil-Jax                                    Airman Compressor             $11,000.00

 

Southeastern Equipment     Sullair Compressor               $11,495.00

 

            GS Compressors                  Grimmer Schmidt                  $  9,950.00

 

            Moriarty Company                Ingersoll Rand                        $  9,995.00

 

The Board took the information under advisement and will further discuss the quotes.

 

Road collection is behind by about 13 miles.

 

The Solid Waste District Annual Report has been completed and was submitted May 23, 2003.

 

 

11:40 a.m.      Scheduled to meet with the Board at 9:30 a.m., Becky Wagner, County Administrator, passed out her weekly report for the Commissioners to review.  They will get with her if they have any questions.
