DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 2006

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512 on Thursday, August 17, 2006.  Chairman Thomas L. Kime called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioner’s Richard L. Cromwell, County Administrator Becky Wagner, and Deputy Clerk Joanne Goerlitz.

 

General Session – The Commissioners were presented with various resolutions and documents for approval.  Commissioners also reviewed agenda items, discussed upcoming meetings and reviewed and updated the calendar of events.

 

Bids for the 2006 Bulk Ice Control Salt Bid for the 2006-2007 Winter Season was received and opened on August 14, 2006.  After review of bids by the County Engineer, the Commissioners awarded the Salt Bid to Cargill Incorporated-Deicing Technology, North Olmstead, OH, in the amount bid by them of $39.30 per ton Dump Truck Deliver.

 

Quotes were received by Maumee Valley Planning Organization on behalf of the Defiance County Commissioners on August 11, 2006 for the construction of West High Street Canoe Launch Facility.  After review of the quotes by Maumee Valley Planning Organization, the Commissioners awarded the construction of West High Street Canoe Launch Facility to Sines Excavating, Defiance, OH in the amount bid by them of $9,892.00.

 

Becky Wagner, County Administrator, presented her report to the Commissioners.  Becky reported

that the new signs for the walking trail at the Defiance County East Complex has been installed.  The signs have health messages and directions where to walk on the trail.

 

Ken Maag, Poggemeyer Design Group, met with the Commissioners and presented plans for the Elliott Road Water/Sanitary Extensions.  Ken reviewed the plans with the Commissioners.  Ken will proceed with getting the necessary approvals for the plans.

 

Randy Vogel, Defiance County Humane Officer, came in for his monthly update.  Randy investigated                                         

134 complaints, handled 5 dog bite incidents and issued 12 citations.  Randy also reported 27 dogs were taken to the shelter, made 314 personal contacts and issued 30 warnings.

 

Randy also reported that the miles driven for the month of July was 2,668 miles and there was 620 pounds of euthanized animals taken to the landfill.

 

The Commissioners and Elected Officials met to review and discuss the options that are being proposed for the Courthouse Project.  The Commissioners held public meetings throughout the County to inform the public of the two options that are being proposed for the project.  Surveys were distributed at each public meeting to give the public a chance to give their input on which option they would support.   The surveys were reviewed by the Commissioners and Commissioner Kime informed the Elected Officials that 84% of the people who handed in the surveys supported a new Courthouse being built (Option 2).  Each Elected Official at the meeting was given a chance to make comments and present which option they would support.  The Elected Officials that attended the meeting are in favor of Option 2.  The Commissioners thanked the Elected Officials for attending the Courthouse Presentations and for their support that they have given them.   A decision will be made on Monday, August 21, 2006 on which option the Commissioners will proceed with.
