DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 2008

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2008 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Chairman Thomas L. Kime called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioners James E. Harris, Jr. and Otto L. Nicely, Laura Howell, Administrator, and Joanne Goerlitz, Acting Clerk.

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, reviewed agenda items and the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

The Commissioners hired Stephanie Metz as Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners effective August 25, 2008.

Laura Howell, Defiance County Administrator, met with the Commissioners for her weekly update.  Laura reported that Senator Buehrer’s office called in reference to the airport taxiway grant and the Ohio Department of Transportation is currently viewing project grant requests and an award will be made in approximately 2-3 weeks.  During the meeting, the Commissioners authorized a leaning electrical pole to be replaced with another pole and the secondary wires that are touching the milk house building at the Evergreen Lane Office Complex be run underground.

Tony Saxton and Matt Gilroy of the Defiance County Airport Authority Board met with the Commissioners to discuss deer control at the Airport.  There is a serious deer/nuisance problem at the Airport and with fall approaching it will become worse.   Tony noted that the Airport Board turned down the option of fencing at the Airport due to the high cost and rejected the option of controlling deer with noise cannons due to disturbance to the neighbors.  Tony presented and discussed a controlled hunt program.  Participants in the program would be selected by a lottery and must be a Defiance County resident.  The lottery will be set up to select three participants and three alternates for a three month term.  There will be guidelines that the participants must adhere to and there will be a $60.00 fee for those that are selected. Disposal, transportation and processing of deer would be the responsibility of the participating shooter.  The controlled hunt program will be discussed at the next Airport Authority Board meeting for approval of the plan.

Kevin Hancock, Ditch Maintenance Administrator, met with the Commissioners for an update.  Kevin reviewed the income and expenses for the Ditch Maintenance Department from January 1 through August 31, 2008.  Kevin also updated the Commissioners on current projects.
