DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2008

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, August 25, 2008 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Chairman Thomas L. Kime called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioners James E. Harris, Jr. and Otto L. Nicely, Laura Howell, Administrator, Stephanie Metz, Clerk, and Joanne Goerlitz, Deputy Clerk. 

 

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents.  The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

 

Russ Herman, Defiance County Assistant Prosecutor met with the Commissioners for an update on various pending legal matters.

 

Warren Schlatter, Defiance County Engineer, met with the Commissioners for his weekly update.   Warren updated the Board on current projects.  Huber Road west of SR 49 will be opened today.  This road was closed for a bridge replacement.  Hicksville-Spencerville Road west of Casebeer-Miller Road was opened on Friday, August 22, 2008.  There is still some intermittent work to be preformed on this reconstruction project, but it should not affect traffic.  Flory Road bridge beams should be set tomorrow.  The completion date for this project is September 30, 2008.  Cullen south of Blanchard Road is scheduled for a bridge replacement and will possibly close later this week.

 

Wayne Olssen, Defiance County Board of Elections Director, Joe Tubbs, Chairman of the Board of Elections, and Pam Schroeder, Deputy Director of the Board of Elections, met with the Commissioners with an update.  They discussed recent directives from Jennifer Brunner, Ohio Secretary of State.  Directive 2008-56 provides minimum security measures for each of the 88 counties.   Directive 2008-65 provides precinct polling location arrangement and diagrams.

 

Defiance County recently launched a discount card program to help consumers cope with the high price of prescription drugs.  The County is making free prescription drug discount cards available under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo) that offers average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.  The Commissioners received a report from NACo for the first two weeks of this program.  There were 83 people benefiting from this program in Defiance County with a 17.63% savings.

 

Paulding County Commissioners, Tony Burkley, Martin Harmon and Ed Straley met with the Commissioners to discuss the Auglaize River Sewer Project.  The project costs and funding were discussed.  Another meeting will be scheduled at a later date for further discussion.
