on Thursday, August 28, 2003. The meeting was called to order by Thomas
Kime, Chairman. Present were Commissioners
Thomas L. Kime, Otto L. Nicely and Richard L.
Cromwell. Also present was Becky
Wagner, Administrator and Joan Brown,
Deputy Clerk.
8:30 a.m. General
Session – Commissioners approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and
documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the
calendar of events, discussed upcoming meetings and updated information for the
calendar of events.
9:15 a.m. Ron Cereghin,
County Maintenance Supervisor, met with the Commissioners regarding the
purchase of a new/used maintenance vehicle.
The Commissioners asked Ron to
prepare specifications for a vehicle then return for further direction.
9:30 a.m. Becky Wagner,
County Administrator,
presented her weekly update at this time.
Becky announced that she and Sherry Carnahan will be meeting
with the Fulton County Administrator to review various office and accounting
procedures.
The Commissioners were provided information from the August 26, 2003, Defiance
County Family & Children First Council meeting.
Bob Arend, County Computer Consultant, recently reviewed
imaging information for county departments.
Since the County Commissioners Association (CCAO) is considering looking
at proposals to offer imaging service to counties on a cost-sharing basis, the
Commissioners will wait for further information before making a decision.
10:30 a.m. Diane Mayer, Senior Services Director; Rick
Weaver, Ron Elliott, and Linda Amos of Poggemeyer Design Group, met with the
Board to discuss the Senior Center
facility. The Senior Center Auxiliary
recently met with Mr. Weaver and asked that a schematic drawing for a Senior
Center building be prepared. The Commissioners decided that the drawing
would be premature until land and funding become available.
11:00 a.m. Diane Mayer and Tina Hiler, Defiance
County Senior Services
Center, met with the Board to
present an update. Defiance
College/Lowe’s Heroes Day is scheduled for Friday, September 12. Lowe’s will donate up to $25.00 worth of
safety items for the homes of 50 seniors.
Defiance College
students will donate labor to install the safety items in the homes. Senior Day at the Defiance County Fair, 283
seniors signed up for lunches.
“Defiance County Senior Services” signs have been installed on the
Senior Services cars and signage will soon be painted on the buses. A Health, Wealth and Happiness Expo will
be held Friday, September 19, at the Northtowne Mall.
Since the Defiance
Hospital discontinued the
Dial-A-Ride service, Senior Services has been inundated with calls from senior
citizens needing rides to medical appointments.
Senior Services does not have the vehicles, funds, or staff to handle
all the requests. The Hospital Board has
offered their vehicle for transportation and will hold the liability insurance;
however, another partner would be needed to pay for the gas and maintenance of
the vehicle as well as staff wages and benefits. The Senior Services Director recently met
with Defiance Clinic representatives and asked for assistance. To date, a long-term commitment has not been
made to provide the needed assistance.
As this program would provide transportation to both facilities, the two
entities are encouraged to get together and resolve this service for the
benefit of the community and the senior citizens.
1:00 p.m. Commissioners attended at Planning
Commission meeting at Maumee Valley Planning.
Today’s meeting adjourned at 11:42
a.m.
