NEWS RELEASE

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio  43512 on Thursday, September 4, 2003.  The meeting was called to order by Thomas Kime, Chairman.  Present were Commissioners Thomas L. Kime, Otto L. Nicely and Richard L. Cromwell.  Also present was Becky Wagner, Administrator, Alison Grimes, Clerk and Joan Brown, Deputy Clerk. 

 

8:30 a.m.        General Session – Commissioners approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events, discussed upcoming meetings and updated information for the calendar of events. 

 

9:15 a.m.        The Board entered EXECUTIVE SESSION regarding Personnel (ORC 121.22 (G) (1)).   EXECUTIVE SESSION ended at 9:28 a.m.  The Board approved a resolution terminating the employment of a county employee, effective at end of business Monday, September 8, 2003.  

 

9:30 a.m.        Becky Wagner, County Administrator, presented her weekly update at this time.  The Juvenile Probation Department has offered to transfer a 1997 Crown Victoria from their inventory to the Humane Agent’s inventory.  The vehicle will be used as a secondary vehicle for the Humane Agent’s Department if/when the van is in for maintenance; the Assistant Dog Warden can utilize this vehicle instead of his personal car; it can be used for out-of-town meetings instead of using the van and the summer license inspector can utilize the vehicle when going door-to-door in the City.

 

Ron Cereghin, Maintenance Supervisor, would like to replace the concrete slab under the propane tanks at Evergreen Lane Office Complex.  Becky will go to the site to see first-hand what needs to be done before any decisions are made.

 

Becky reviewed information concerning the “Trends for Tomorrow” seminar scheduled for Friday, October 17 at Defiance College.  The Board is planning to attend this seminar which is strictly devoted to business trends in the region.

 

She also reviewed information she received when she and Sherry Carnahan, Deputy Clerk, visited Fulton County Wednesday.  They met with Vond Hall, Fulton County Administrator, to get input on how Fulton County

 

10:00 a.m.      Tim Houck, County Landfill Manager, along with Tom Dixon of Eastman and Smith, met with the Board to review an addendum to the Landfill’s Policies and Procedures Manual.  Divided into several sections, the Addendum includes any resolutions passed by the Board which affects Landfill employees, any memos Tim sends concerning day-to-day work at the Landfill and any other pertinent information specific to Landfill activities.

 

Tim will make copies for the Commissioners to review for their input and/or questions.

 

11:00 a.m.      Cathy Cooley, Beilharz Architects, met with the Board to open bids for the Boiler Replacement Project at Evergreen Lane Office Complex.  Also attending the bid opening was: Ron Cereghin, County Maintenance Supervisor; Jacob Campagna, Helm and Associates; Jackie Moyer, L. R. Babcock; and Nancy Groll, Fitzenrider, Inc.

 

Bids were received from the following:

Estimated cost of the project is $50,000.00.

 

The Commissioners accepted the bids as presented for further review.  Cathy will take the bids to Jerry Overmier who will review them and give a recommendation some time next week.

 

11:15 a.m.      Lisa Karcher, Maumee Valley Planning, met with the Board to open bids for the Farmer Township Culvert Replacement Project, a FY02 Formula Program project.  Also attending the bid opening was: Randy Varner, Fort Defiance Construction and Jim Donze, a Farmer Township Trustee.

 

Bids were received from the following:

Defiance, Ohio

 

Estimated cost of the project is $20,400.00

 

The bids were accepted as presented by the Board and Lisa will review them and present a recommendation early next week. 

 

She also briefly reviewed budget information concerning the Indian Bridge Lane Sanitary Sewer project.  The information will be forwarded to Lee Sonnenburg, Rural Development, for funding recalculation purposes.
