DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

NEWS RELEASE

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Board of Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Defiance, Ohio  43512 on Monday, September 22, 2003.  The meeting was called to order by Thomas Kime, Chairman.  Present were Commissioners Thomas L. Kime, Otto L. Nicely and Richard L. Cromwell.  Also present was Becky Wagner, Administrator, Alison Grimes, Clerk, and Joan Brown, Deputy Clerk. 

 

 

8:30 a.m.        Russ Herman, the Defiance County Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, met with the Board to review various documents requiring his review and/or approval.  There are only one or two documents currently requiring his review and approval. 

 

 

9:00 a.m.        General Session – Commissioners approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events, discussed upcoming meetings and updated information for the calendar of events. 

 

Commissioner Cromwell reviewed information he received during a CCAO Legislative Committee meeting he attended last Thursday. 

 

 

10:00 a.m.      Gaylon Davis, County Engineer, presented his weekly update at this time.  He informed the Board that the Banner School Road culvert was set in place by a crane on Friday.  The overall length of the culvert is 80’, broken down into about 12 individual pieces 6’ to 7’ feet in length. 

 

He distributed the latest ODOT construction report for the Board’s review and noted that the 2003 pavement marking and seal coating projects are completed.  Mr. Davis also noted that the Bend Road Bridge project is moving along well; workers moved dirt over the weekend.

 

 

10:30 a.m.      Kevin Hancock, District Technician for the Soil and Water Conservation District, met with the Board to open bids for the Doty Run Ditch Project #98-4.  Also attending the bid opening was: Linda Yaufman, Rosengarten Construction; Tim Baden and Cory Baden, TimCor, Inc.; and Joe Murray, George Gradel Company. 

 

Bids were received from the following:

 

George Gradel Company                                        $356,776.70

Toledo, Ohio

 

Rosengarten Construction                                       $351,701.20

Ottawa, Ohio

 

TimCor, Inc.                                                               $386,000.00

Defiance, Ohio

 

 

 

 

Soil and Water’s pre-bid cost estimate for this project is $357,000.00.

 

The Board accepted the bids as presented.  Kevin will submit a recommendation later this week.

 

 

At 11:00 a.m., Commissioners Nicely and Cromwell, along with Bruce Clevenger, OSU Extension Office Director, traveled to Toledo where they joined a group going to Michigan to view the destruction caused by the Emerald Ash Borer.  The Emerald Ash Borer has already been detected in Hicksville, where ash trees have been quarantined in attempts to contain the insect.
