NEWS RELEASE
The Board of Defiance County Commissioners
met at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference
Room of the Board of Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Defiance,
Ohio 43512
on Thursday, September 25, 2003. The meeting was called to order by Thomas
Kime, Chairman. Present were Commissioners
Thomas L. Kime, Otto L. Nicely and Richard L.
Cromwell. Also present was Becky
Wagner, Administrator, Alison Grimes, Clerk, and Joan
Brown, Deputy Clerk.
8:30 a.m. General
Session – Commissioners approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and
documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the
calendar of events, discussed upcoming meetings and updated information for the
calendar of events.
9:30 a.m. Becky Wagner,
County Administrator,
presented her weekly update at this time.
She reminded the Board that the bid opening for the re-roofing project
at Evergreen Lane Office Complex is scheduled for Thursday, October 2 at 11:00 a.m.
An exhaust system on one of the Maintenance Department’s
vehicles was replaced.
The compressor on the condensing unit at Building C at Island
Park has tied up and Ron Cereghin,
Maintenance Supervisor, would like to replace it. The lowest quote received was from Duncan
Supply Company for $1,752.67. The Board
approved the purchase.
At 9:50 a.m.,
the Board entered EXECUTIVE SESSION regarding Personnel (ORC 121.22 (G)
(1)). Russ Herman, Chief Assistant
Prosecuting Attorney, and Ron Cereghin, Maintenance Supervisor, were also in
attendance. EXECUTIVE SESSION ended at 10:07 a.m. After
discussion, the Board of Commissioners approved a three-day suspension, without
pay, for a county employee, due to excessive tardiness.
10:40 a.m. Tim Houck,
Landfill Manager, met with the Board to present an update of Landfill and
Environmental/Litter activities. He
reviewed Landfill finances, waste receipts and current/upcoming projects. He also noted that new entrance/exit signs
were erected at the Landfill.
The Public Works crew is a little behind in mowing due to
adverse weather conditions but is slowly catching up. The road litter collection crew has been
averaging 70 miles of roads per month for a total of approximately 682 miles
cleaned so far this year. Per grant
requirements, 905 miles of roadways must be cleaned.
1,200 students in 52 different presentations were educated
through in-class litter talks in all second and forth-grade classes throughout
the County. The program will begin again
in September or October.
Radio and newspaper ads are being run (per the requirements
of the Litter Grant) promoting recycling opportunities and environmental
program projects.
The Solid Waste District is in the process of creating a web
site which will serve Defiance,
Paulding, Fulton and Williams
Counties. Links to the various counties may be found on

The next Solid Waste District meeting is scheduled for
Monday, October 20 at 1:30 p.m. Fulton County Commissioners will host the
meeting.
At 11:30 a.m.,
Commissioners and Staff left to attend the Hospice Fall Fair at the U.A.W.
Hall.
