DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session on  Thursday, September 27, 2007  8:30 a.m., in the Conference Room of the Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Defiance, OH 43512.  Chairman Otto L. Nicely called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioners Thomas L. Kime and James E. Harris, Jr., Cara Brown, Clerk and Joanne Goerlitz, Deputy Clerk.       

 

General Session – The Commissioners were presented with various resolutions and documents for approval.  The Commissioners reviewed agenda items, and discussed upcoming meetings and events.

 

Wayne Olsson, Board of Elections Director, met with the Commissioner to discuss the Board of Elections monetary needs for the up coming election in November and the Special Election in December, advertising for the elections and personnel issues. Wayne has requested approximately $44,000.00 to help cover the costs of the elections. The Commissioners authorized $13,000.00 to be allocated to the Board of Elections for the elections to be held in November. The Commissioners advised Wayne to contact the Commissioners office in late November to provide a more up-to-date amount of what will be needed for the special election.

 

An Operations update was provided by the staff. It was reported that water meter pits at the Regional Jail and Christy Road are in the midst of being repaired and painted. Due to the dampness of these pits, there have been issues with the paint sticking. Additional paint is being looked for that might work with the dampness.

 

Chad Hall, Defiance County Soil & Water, met with the Commissioners to discuss the county cropland reduction.

 

Tim Houck, Environmental Services Director, submitted his monthly financial report for revenue & expenses for the Landfill.  The sales summary total for August 2007 is $441,017.34  The annual tons total to date is 79439.49 and the total annual cubic yards are 341,532.

 

Tim also reported the yearly/monthly cubic yards comparison for 2007 is 59,535 vs. 32,862 for this same time in 2006.  The yearly/monthly tons comparison submitted for 2007 was 13,192.16 tons vs. 9,882.30 tons in 2006.  Leachate monthly gallon total for the month of August is 290,070.00.

 

Tim advised that the Environmental Services office along with other area businesses with be sponsoring a Mobile Collection on October 6, 2007 between 10:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. for Household Hazardous Waste. The drop off location will be in the West parking lot of Johns Manville located on Carpenter Road. This drive is for the residents of Defiance, Williams, Paulding, and Fulton Counties, materials from businesses will not be accepted.

 

The Commissioners have passed a resolution for the formation of the Defiance County Port Authority. The Port Authority will provide an avenue to offer businesses interested in establishing/expanding into Defiance County tax incentives for bringing their business to the area.

 

The Commissioners and Staff attended the Hospice Auxiliary Fall Fair at the UAW Hall.
