DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 9, 2008 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Vice-Chairman James E. Harris, Jr. called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioner Otto L. Nicely, Laura Howell, Administrator, Stephanie Metz, Clerk and Joanne Goerlitz, Deputy Clerk. 

 

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

 

Laura Howell, Administrator, provided her weekly update to the Board.  Laura informed the Commissioners that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources recently awarded the Defiance County Commissioners an award of $200,000.00 from the Cooperative Boating Facility Grant.  The Cooperative Boating Grant program provides up to 100% reimbursement assistance.   Laura Howell will attend a mandatory meeting in Columbus on October 28th to receive the agreement and details of the Grant.

 

Laura also provided a Board of Elections Update.  Approximately 40 citizens took advantage of the register and vote window.  The Board of Elections has currently received 1700 absentee ballot requests and 300 voters have taken advantage of early voting at the Board of Elections office.  Any voter may come to the Board of Elections office for early voting to avoid long lines at the polls, October 31, 2008.  The Office will also be open on Saturday, November 1, 2008 fro 8:30 am thru 12:00 non for absentee voting.  This is also the last day the Board of Elections is able to accept written requests for absentee ballots.

 

Tina Hiler, Senior Services Director recently provided the Commissioners with an update.  Tina informed the Commissioners that this year’s Farmer’s Market Program has been a success and will end in October.  She also informed the Commissioners that the Senior Center is providing help on filing the Tax Stimulus Forms to seniors.  The Tax Stimulus Forms need to be filed by October 15, 2008.  Defiance County Senior Services currently contracts with PASSPORT to provide medical transports.  The PASSPORT program has just recently enhanced their programming to offer the opportunity for non-medical transports.
