DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2003

NEWS RELEASE

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Board of Defiance County Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio  43512 on Thursday, October 16, 2003.  The meeting was called to order by Thomas Kime, Chairman.  Present were Commissioners Thomas L. Kime, Otto L. Nicely and Richard L. Cromwell.  Also present was Becky Wagner, Administrator, and Alison Grimes, Clerk.  Joan Brown, Deputy Clerk, is on vacation.

8:30 a.m.        Mark Hopper, Public Safety Services Coordinator, met briefly with the Board to review information concerning Informer Alert Boxes.  The Informer is a tone-alert radio, activated by the 911 Emergency Center, designed specifically for emergency management.  The boxes could be placed in schools, industries or businesses.  Funding from a FEMA grant would allow the purchase of 25 boxes.  District schools will be contacted first to see if they are interested in installing a unit in their school.  The box will be no charge; however the school would be requested to pay for installation and the purchase of the needed coaxial cable and antenna.

8:45 a.m.        General Session – Commissioners approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events, discussed upcoming meetings and updated information for the calendar of events.

9:50 a.m.        Todd Brink, City resident, voiced concerns regarding the removal of trees behind the old hospital facility.  He lives at 208 Biede and can view the treed area from his home.  He would like it to be kept as a park or park-like area.  He has already gone to a City Council meeting and voiced his concerns there.  The Board informed him that the County does not own the property nor has any legal say in the status of the property.  They did note that if, at some time, the County does obtain ownership, the Board informed Mr. Brink that they had no plans to remove the trees at this time.  Mr. Brink also asked several questions about the Memorandum of Understanding.

10:00 a.m.      Becky Wagner, Administrator, presented her weekly update at this time.  Paving and striping on the parking lot at the KeyBank facility was to begin this week but was slightly delayed due to Monday’s rainy weather.

She noted that Ron Cereghin reported that:

  • The new condenser unit has been installed in the health department
  • Air ducts in Building B will be cleaned next week
  • Blue Flame will be setting the tanks at Evergreen Lane Office Complex next Tuesday.
  • Fitzenrider believes the new boilers at Evergreen Lane will be running by next Friday.

The group also briefly discussed the results of last Saturday’s County auction.

11:00 a.m.      Tim Houck, County Landfill Manager, scheduled to meet with the Board for his monthly update, cancelled as he is out-of-town for a Wastecon seminar.

Today’s meeting adjourned at 11:12 a.m.
