The Board of
General Session –
The Commissioners were presented with various resolutions and documents for
approval. The Commissioners reviewed
agenda items, discussed upcoming meetings, reviewed, and updated the calendar
of events.
The Commissioners
met with Warren Schlatter, Defiance County Engineer.
Bruce Clevenger from
the Ohio State University Extension Office came in with Barb Rohrs and Teresa
Johnson to review their third quarter report.
Bruce discussed the
Defiance County Master Gardeners volunteer thousands of hours of community
service annually. They have assisted with over 50 phone calls or personal
contacts while volunteering at the OSU Extension office. They have also provided community
beautification and planning at several public parks and gardens.
During July through
September, over 180 phone calls and/ or personal visits were made to the county
agriculture/natural resources educator.
The calls were requesting information on crop production, pond
management, insect-pest problems and/ or farm management.
Bruce also reported
there was a workshop called “Ponds with a Purpose”. Nineteen pond owners and
lake managers attended the workshop.
Some of the topics discussed were nutrient management, aeration, fish
selection and management and vegetation control. 82% of the participants surveyed indicated
they are planning to make changes because of the workshop.
Barb Rohrs discussed
their Healthy People program. Barb
mentioned the recent news regarding food born illnesses and that it reminds us
that food safety cannot be taken lightly.
Thirty people attended a food safety training class, which taught them
that some 24-hour flu illnesses are caused from food poisoning.

presenting nutrition education information and resources to
Teresa Johnson
discussed the 2006 Junior Fair Update.
Teresa mentioned the 2006 Defiance County Junior Fair had Entries from
512 exhibitors representing both 4-H and FFA.
335 members with non-livestock entries completed 4-H project judging
requirements in late July and displayed their exhibits in the multi-purpose
building. A total of 29 youth received
honors at the Ohio State Fair.
Teresa also
submitted her report on 4-H Camp Palmer, which had its highest participation
with 180 campers. 67% of campers
received a $50 scholarship to attend 4-H camp. A memorial flag folding
presentation was held on the last night and was conducted by the 1st
Battalion, 25th Marines—Weapons Company. The Weapons Company also discussed firearm
safety and brought some weapons and gear for the campers to look at.
