DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

MONDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2008

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, October 27, 2008 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Chairman Thomas L. Kime called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioners James E. Harris, Jr. and Otto L. Nicely, Laura Howell, Administrator, Stephanie Metz, Clerk, and Joanne Goerlitz, Deputy Clerk. 

 

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents.  The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

 

Warren Schlatter, Defiance County Engineer, met with the Commissioners for his weekly update.   Standley Road east of State Route 18 now open; there is still some roadside grading work to be completed, but the should not affect traffic.  The Spencerville-Hicksville Road Reconstruction Project has the profile and curb work completed, there is still more work to be done with this project, though.

 

Bruce Clevenger, Barb Rohrs and Teresa Johnson from the Ohio State University Extension Office updated the Commissioners on several programs offered through OSU Extension.

 

Bruce Clevenger reported on Agriculture, Natural Resources and Community Development.  Bruce noted that OSU in cooperation with Defiance Soil & Water Conservation District provided nearly 50 area farmers with a field day about Integrated Pest Management and 2008 Pest Issues.    The educator discussed scouting for disease symptoms, using OSU crop performance data to select genetic resistance and demonstrated how to stage crop development during critical growth periods. 

 

The Defiance County Farmers Markets wrap up this weekend.  This year it had excellent vendor participation with a total of 62 vendors registered for the three locations: Defiance, Hicksville and Sherwood.

 

Barb Rohrs reported on Family and Consumer Sciences.  Bard noted that the Family Nutrition Program presented 52 educational sessions with approximately 415 participants.  Family Nutrition Programs and information is available at Defiance County Job & Family Services, WIC, Senior Center sites, low income housing sites and food pantries. 

 

As food safety continues to be a growing concern to consumers, the OSU office received over 50 called regarding proper food preservation methods in this 3 month period.  Barb informed the Board about the ServSafe program.  ServSafe is a National Restaurant Association food safety course for managers and food handlers.  Many restaurants require managers to be certified through this program.  Five people attended the food handler’s course and nine attended the manager’s course.

 

Teresa Johnson reported on 4-H Youth Development.  4-H Camp Palmer had 165 total campers.  This number represents 108 youth campers, 47 teen counselors and 10 adult volunteers.  45% of campers received a scholarship.  Youth participating at camp made new friends, developed independence from their family, participated in leadership and skill building activities and had safe supervised fun with their friends.  Kids Central 2008 had another great year serving Defiance County Youth and their families.  Throughout the summer an average of 185 you participated in the five weeks at the Defiance Christian Church and the Hicksville Elementary School.  All summer the focus was on being active, staying fit and making healthy decisions.

 

The Commissioners attended the Four County Solid Waste District Board of Directors Meeting at the Fulton County Commissioners’ Office.  The Joint Board heard recycling and department updates from each of the four counties’ (Defiance, Fulton, Paulding and Williams) directors.  The Joint Board also approved the 2009 Budget.

 

The Joint Board of Defiance and Paulding County Commissioners met at the Fulton County Commissioners’ Office to approve the final construction assessments of BeeTree Run Joint Ditch #04-03 and adding the BeeTree Run Joint Ditch #04-03 to permanent maintenance in Defiance County’s Ditch Maintenance Program.
