General Session – The Commissioners were presented with various resolutions and documents for approval.  The Commissioners reviewed agenda items, discussed upcoming meetings, reviewed, and updated the calendar of events.

Bob Arend, Arend Enterprises came in to talk with the Board about the existing telephone system at the Defiance County Courthouse.

There has been discussion in the past regarding intermittent problems with the current system such as dropped calls and severe noise on the line.  Bob indicated we do have a refurbished board for the telephone system, but there is no guarantee it would work.  Parts for the existing telephone system are difficult to find because the system is outdated.

The Commissioners agreed to work with the current telephone system until the end of the year at which time they will consider an update.

Defiance County Humane Officer, Randy Vogel submitted his report for the month of August 2006.  Randy reported his office handled and investigated 170 complaints, took four dogs to the shelter, issued 25 warnings and issued 34 citations.

Randy also reported the number of miles driven during the month of August was 3,076 and the pounds of euthanized animals taken to the landfill were 2,320.

Dr. Stephen Wright, Director, Ohio State Extension Office, West Regional Operations came in to discuss various issues with the Board.  Dr. Wright explained that the enrollment into the 4-H Club is significantly higher than is past years.

Dr. Wright also discussed the organizational chart and explained the Senior Fair Board is legally responsible to set and uphold the policies within.   Senior Fair Board members define the responsibilities of the Junior Fair Board and decide who will be on the Advisory Committees.

Dr. Wright also explained the Senior Fair Board does not govern the Advisory Committees for the 4-H Club; the extension office is accountable for the 4-H Advisory Committees.
