Early Intervention Services Early intervention services are available to help families with infants and toddlers, ages birth through two years, who have a documented developmental delay or who are at-risk medically or environmentally. Individual Family Service Plans are written to help meet the needs of the families of the children served. Services may be provided in a center-based setting with the parent accompanying the child to class, or in the home.
Preschool Classes There are six preschool classes for children ages three to five years old. Individual programs are followed for each child giving them many growth experiences. Extensive work is done with language, body movement, self-care, getting along with others and readiness skills. Preschool classes are limited in size to twelve students. Children with developmental delays are in classrooms with typically developing peers.
School-age Program Good Samaritan School provides services to students from age five through twenty-one. There are five school-age classes. These classes provide training in self-help, basic knowledge, communication, fine and gross motor, socialization, independent living, leisure, and vocational skills. The emphasis for the Vocational Class is independent living skills and vocational training for competitive employment.
Specialists Many of the children served by Good Samaritan School have a myriad of handicapping conditions requiring the expertise of individuals trained in specific areas. A physical development specialist, physical therapist, occupational therapist and two speech therapists provide ancillary services for 125 children.
Recreational Services Good Samaritan School provides many recreational opportunities for children and adults. Through Special Olympics, individuals are able to participate in basketball, swimming, bowling, tennis, and track and field. Annually Good Sam hosts an area Special Olympics swim meet and bowling tournament. Good Sam has also hosted the Area IV Basketball Tournament in a ten county area.
Case Management Case management is a service available for students eligible for MR/DD services. Case managers help coordinate resources with agencies and professionals in the area assisting families in identifying services to meet needs and goals. These services are intended to maximize the quality of an individual's life in the least restrictive manner.
