DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2008

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 21, 2008 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Chairman Thomas L. Kime called the meeting to order. Also present were Commissioners Otto L. Nicely and James E. Harris, Jr., Laura Howell, Administrator, Cara Brown, Clerk, and Joanne Goerlitz, Deputy Clerk.

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

Ken Keller, First Insurance & Investments, met with the Commissioners to discuss an amendment to the County’s insurance policy concerning third party claims. Ken advised that last summer, the United State Supreme Courts issued an opinion on the validity of subrogation clauses in health plans. This opinion has strengthened insurance companies’ rights to be more aggressive on the recovery of third party claims.

Laura Howell, County Administrator, provided her update to the Commissioners. Laura recommended that William Webb be awarded the bid for farming County owned ground on State Route 111. Commissioner Nicely and Commissioner Harris accepted the recommendation and awarded the bid to Mr. Webb.

Laura also advised that Bob Arend, Arend Enterprises, reported that part of Evergreen Lane Office Complex is having troubles with their phone system. Koenig Security has been out to reset the system several times but the problems still exist. The Board instructed Laura to obtain more information before a decision can be made.

Greg Reinhart, Wastewater Director, and Jan Roehrig, Wastewater Clerk, met with the Commissioners to provide their monthly update. Greg submitted his monthly income and expense report for January, 2008. He also advised that the Express Sewer bubbler system is still not working properly. Greg is still working with the service technicians on troubleshooting the problems.
