DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 22, 2012 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Chairman Thomas L. Kime called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioners James E. Harris, Jr., and Otto L. Nicely, Laura Howell, Administrator, Stephanie Metz, Clerk, and Lanie Miller, Deputy Clerk. 

 

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents.  The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

 

Based on the recommendation of Defiance County Engineer Warren Schlatter, the Commissioners awarded the following projects:

2012 Paving of Various Roads Proposal A                RG Zachrich, Inc.                   $259,518.00

2012 Paving of Various Roads Proposal B                Gerken Paving, Inc.                $911,311.75

2012 Paving of Various Roads Proposal C                Ward Construction Co.           $222,371.39

2012 Pavement Marking                                            Aero Mark, Inc.                       $97,237.52

 

Laura Howell, Administrator, met with the Board to provide her weekly update with various department and project updates.

 

Niki Warncke met with the Commissioners for the second public hearing to inform citizens about programs available to the county as outlined in the State of Ohio Consolidated Plan. Funding for programs administered by OCD are provided by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program, HOME Investment Partnerships Program, and other funding sources as identified by the State. Based on citizen input and local officials’ assessment of the county needs, Defiance County is proposing to undertake the following CHIP activities for Fiscal Year 2012.

Mike Williams, Robert Layne, Darcey Lehman and Dennis Shaffner, Veterans Commission, met with the Commissioners to review the 2011 Activity Report. The total budget spent in 2011 was $289,673.78. Financial Assistance Expenditures totaled $63,396.01 with 123 Veterans assisted. The total cost of transporting veterans for medical services was $18,265.79. There were 293 veterans transported to DVA Medical Facilities (each time a veteran went is counted). This is a reduction from 509 in 2010.

 

The Veterans Commission also requested the County to become a “Military Order of the Purple Heart County”. The Commissioners’ Office will work with the Veterans Office to have Defiance County be designated.
