NEWS RELEASE
The Board of Defiance County Commissioners
met in regular session at 8:30 a.m.
in the Conference Room of the Board of Commissioners, 500 Court Street, Suite
A, Defiance, Ohio 43512
on Monday, May 3, 2004. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Richard
L. Cromwell. Present were Commissioners Richard
L. Cromwell, Thomas L. Kime and Otto L. Nicely.
Also present were Becky Wagner,
Administrator, Alison Grimes, Clerk, and Joan Brown, Deputy Clerk.
8:30 a.m. Russ Herman,
Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, met with the Board to review several
documents pending his approval. Currently,
Mr. Herman is up-to-date on County paperwork.
9:00 a.m. General
Session Commissioners approved and
signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved various travel
requests, reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events, discussed
upcoming meetings and updated information for the calendar of events.
The Board reviewed an announcement that the U.S. Department
of Agriculture promised Ohio more
than $1.3 million for this summer’s Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program
with nearly $1.2 million going to 10 northwest Ohio
counties – Lucas, Wood, Fulton, Ottawa,
Williams, Defiance, Paulding,
Henry, Sandusky and Erie. Three central Ohio
counties share the remainder of Ohio’s
grant. The coupons are available to
people 60 or older whose income is below $17,244 for a person living alone or
$23,107 for two people and can be redeemed only for locally grown produce at
participating farm markets. Seniors can
get up to $90 of the $5.00 coupons, which are given out first come, first
served through the Senior Centers.
10:00 a.m. Due
to another commitment, Gaylon Davis, County
Engineer, scheduled to met with the
Board at this time was unavailable.
Warren Schlatter, Chief Deputy Engineer, met with the Board for a brief
update. Recommendations for the Access
Management Committee were reviewed.
Work resumed today on the Bend
Road Bridge
project.
10:30 a.m. Randy Vogel. County
Dog Warden, met with the Board for
a departmental update. He reviewed his
statistics for the month of April, noting that his office investigate 108
complaints, took 39 dogs to the Humane Shelter, and issued 26 warnings and 11
citations. He logged 2,829 miles on the
Dog Warden van and transported 1,460 pounds of euthanized animals to the
Landfill.
Beginning today, the door-to-door check of dog license is
underway. If the owner cannot show a
current tag or receipt for the purchase of a current dog license, a citation
will be issued. All dogs over three
months of age are required to have a license.
An owner has 30 days to purchase a license after acquiring a new
dog.
11:00 a.m. Kim
Moss, County Health Commissioner; Craig Richards, Sanitarian, Defiance County
Health Department; Larry Haver, Mayor of Hicksville; Mick Pocratsky and Ed
Foster, Hicksville Council members; and
Jeff Stone, City Wastewater department, met with the Board regarding land
application of septage waste in Defiance County. The Village
of Hicksville is considering a
septage waste receiving facility with their new treatment plant. The meeting was continued to gather more
information.
1:30 p.m. Cheri Streicher and Brent Tow of
Community Health Professionals, Inc., met with the Board with
information regarding plans for an In-Patient Hospice Center to be built at the
site of the Defiance Area Visiting Nurses located at 6825 State Route 66 North
of Defiance. Fund raising is in the
initial stages and during the next couple of months presentations will be made
to various businesses and organizations.
