DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

MONDAY, MAY 12, 2008

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2008 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Chairman Thomas L. Kime called the meeting to order. Also present were Commissioners James E. Harris, Jr. and Otto L. Nicely, Laura Howell, County Administrator, Cara Brown, Clerk, and Joanne Goerlitz, Deputy Clerk.

 

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

 

Jeff Ankney, Defiance Soil & Water Administrator, met with the Commissioners to provide an update. Jeff advised that Congressman Bob Latta will be at the Soil & Water office on Friday, May 23, 2008 to tour several conservation sites that the office has worked on. Jeff informed the Board that there are currently four (4) ditches that the Soil & Water office will be working this year: Cowell, Kinner, Stover, and North Gordon.

 

The shelter house at the Penney Nature Center has been completely built. Weather permitting, the sidewalks and a handicapped parking pad will be poured this week. Once the ground has time to dry out a bit, stone will brought in for the parking lot.

 

Jeff reminded the Commissioners of the 2nd public hearing on the Black Ditch that is scheduled for Monday, May 19, 2008 at 7:30 pm in the Fairview Elementary School cafeteria. Also, bids for the Hoschak Tile project are scheduled to be opened on Monday, May 19, 2008 at 1:15 pm.

 

Warren Schlatter, Defiance County Engineer, met with the Commissioners to provide an update and to open bids for the Flory Road Bridge replacement. Five bids were received for this project: Fort Defiance Construction & Supply, Inc, Defiance, OH - $296,470.00; Miller Bros. Const., Inc., Archbold, OH - $296,994.60; R.G. Zachrich Construction, Inc., Defiance, OH - $269,645.10; Stable Construction Company, LLC, Painesville, OH - $259,952.00; and Vernon Nagel, Inc., Napoleon, OH - $267,124.09. The engineer’s estimate is $270,446.20. The Commissioners took the bids under advisement and upon the recommendation of the engineer, said bid will be awarded at a later date.

 

Warren advised that Beerbower Rd., between Rosedale and Ridenour Roads, is still closed. He anticipates the closure will last another week or two. Also, Mansfield Road will be closed intermittently as crews prepare for culvert replacements.

 

Jack Graf, Job & Family Services Director, met with the Commissioners in Executive Session to discuss employee performance evaluations.

 

The Board attended the Four County Solid Waste District Board of Directors meeting at Paulding County Commissioners office. Following this meeting, a Joint Board of Commissioners of Defiance and Paulding Counties held a meeting on Beetree Run Ditch.
