DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2008 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Chairman Thomas L. Kime called the meeting to order. Also present were Commissioners James E. Harris, Jr. and Otto L. Nicely, Laura Howell, Administrator, Cara Brown, Clerk, and Joanne Goerlitz, Deputy Clerk.

 

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents, approved several travel requests, reviewed the agenda items and the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

 

Laura Howell, Administrator, provided her weekly update to the Board. Laura informed the Commissioners that Ron Cereghin, Maintenance Supervisor, obtained quotes for a dump trailer. The Commissioners authorized the purchase of a 7000 lb, 6’x10’, 2 axle trailer at the cost of $3,600.00. Ron is also requesting permission to purchase several vacuum cleaners to replace old worn-out ones.

 

Laura also provided an update on Tom Knoll, a veteran running from San Diego, CA to Arlington Cemetery. Mr. Knoll is scheduled to arrive in downtown Defiance around 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11th. A Marine Corps League ceremony will be held at Canal Park.

 

Jerry Overmier, Beilharz Architects, met with the Commissioners to open bids for the 4-H Horse Barn Reroof Project. The engineer’s estimate is $75,000.00. Three bids were received: Baker-Shindler Contracting, Defiance - $71,735.00; Duerk Construction, Defiance - $68,957.00; and Siebenaler Construction, Edon - $66,149.00. The Board took the bids under advisement and upon the recommendation of Jerry, said bid will be awarded at a later date.

 

Warren Schlatter, Defiance County Engineer, met with the Commissioners to open bids for the Hicksville-Spencerville Road Reconstruction (Rural and Urban). The engineer’s estimate for the Rural section is Option 1 - $395,968.13, Option 2 - $408,863.13. The bids received for the rural section, Option 1, are as follows: Brooks Construction Company, Inc., Ft. Wayne, IN - $399,475.00 and Gerken Paving, Napoleon - $459,380.90. Bids for Option 2 are: Brooks Construction Company - $382,133.38 and Gerken Paving - $437,546.40.

 

The engineer’s estimate for the Urban section Option 1 is $278,009.74 and Option 2 is $278,406.51. The bids received for Option 1 are: Brooks Construction Company - $327,005.00 and Gerken Paving - $328,538.20. Bids for Option 2 are: Brooks Construction Company - $308,234.60 and Gerken Paving - $304,630.90. The Board took the bids, for both the rural and urban sections and all options, under advisement. Upon the recommendation of Warren, said bids will be awarded at a later date.

 

The Board signed the contracts for the Hoschak Tile #08-01 project. The project is to commence on or before June 15, 2008 and shall be completed by October 1, 2008.
