COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30
a.m. on Thursday, June 14, 2012 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners
Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512. Chairman Thomas L. Kime called the meeting to
order. Also present were Commissioners Otto L.
Nicely and James E. Harris, Jr., Laura Howell, Administrator, Stephanie Metz, Clerk, and Lanie Miller,
Deputy Clerk.
The Commissioners met in General Session and
approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents. The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar
of events and discussed upcoming meetings.
Laura Howell,
Administrator, met with the Commissioners to provide her weekly update.
The Commissioners
attended the Joint Interstate with DeKalb, Williams and Defiance Counties
meeting on the Big Run Ditch. DeKalb County received the following bids for the
work: Miller Contracting Group, Inc. - $196,631.85; Sines Excavating LLC -
$169,416.00; and Tri County Excavating - $166,731.50. The engineer’s estimate
for the project was $206,597.25. Based on the recommendation of DeKalb County
Soil & Water, the Joint Board awarded the project to Tri County Excavating. The Joint Board also approved the assessments
to be placed in 2013.
The Commissioners
attended the Joint Board meeting for DeKalb and Defiance Counties to review the
2013 ditch maintenance assessments. After review of the ditches by Kevin
Hancock, Defiance County Ditch Maintenance, and Michael Kline, DeKalb County
Engineering & Surveying, Inc., the Joint Board approved the 2013 ditch
maintenance assessments for ditches maintained by both Defiance and DeKalb
counties.
On Wednesday, the
Commissioners attended the Annual Defiance County Farm Bureau Policy
Development Breakfast at Kissner’s. Each year members of the Defiance County
Farm Bureau meet to formulate policies to guide the organization. An essential
component of the Farm Bureau policy development process is the input from our
public officials and local government departments. This meeting allowed Farm Bureau
members and public officials to exchange ideas and plans that will affect the future
of Defiance County and Ohio.
On Wednesday, the
Commissioners held a Special Session to meet with Johns Manville to discuss the
waste agreement.
The Commissioners
recently received the monthly activity report for May, 2012 from Amy Galbraith,
Defiance County Clerk of Courts. Amy reported collecting $11,895.15 in legal,
$21,607.56 in title, $353,122.49 in sales or use and dealers’ tax, and
$7,391.82 in watercraft tax. There was $72,231.28 deposited in legal and
$406,818.17 in title. There were 1,685 titles issued, 406 notations of liens
and 521 inspections.
