COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
MONDAY, JULY 9, 2012
The Board of
Russ Herman, Defiance County Assistant Prosecutor, met with the
Commissioners for an update on various pending legal matters.
The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed
various resolutions, contracts and documents.
The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed
upcoming meetings.
The Commissioners approved Ron Cereghin, Maintenance Director, to work
with Jeff Timbrook, Defiance County Highway Superintendent, to replace a stone
berm along the fairgrounds driveway, as recently requested by the Fairboard.
The Commissioners approved reimbursing the County Engineer for the stone &
placement.
Marc Warncke met with the Commissioners to discuss an annexation
petition of 1.665 acres more or less, being lot 1, 2, 3, Colwell’s
Addition, located in the Southeast quarter of Section 19 and the Northeast
quarter of Section 30, Township 4 North, Range 5 East, Richland Township,
County of Defiance, to the City of Defiance. As the annexation met all the required criteria, the Commissioners
approved the annexation as petitioned.
Warren Schlatter, Defiance County Engineer, and Jason Green, Hicksville
High School student, met with the Commissioners for an update. Warren presented
his 2012 Accumulated Revenue Report. Warren stated that the ditch work is
completed on Krouse Road,
the crews will be working on replacing the culverts under the road. The
pavement widening is completed on Hammersmith Road; it is currently being done
on Glenburg Road. Once Glenburg
is completed, they will continue to Elliott Road (possibly Wednesday), then to Breckler Road. Mulligans Bluff Road Bridge is now opened;
all remaining work is off the roadway. The Bend Road will be closing in the
next two weeks for a bridge replacement north of Mud Creek Road.
Bruce Clevenger and Teresa Johnson, OSU Extension, met with the
Commissioners for a quarterly update.
Agriculture Natural
Resources: A monitoring/scouting project began June 1st for the
Western Bean Cutworm with the first moth caught on June 8th. Traps
will be monitored weekly and adjacent corn fields scouted for egg masses and
larvae damage to corn ears.
During April, May and
June, more than 185 phone calls and/or personal visits were made to the county
agriculture/natural resources educator. These calls were requesting information
on crop and livestock production, horticulture, pond management and/or farm
management. Master Gardeners and office staff additionally assisted with 35
horticulture phone calls and/or visitors requesting assistance on plant health,
insect identification or care of lawns and gardens.
Family Nutrition
Program: The Family Nutrition Program presented 98 educational sessions
with approximately 422 participants. Programs included: MyPlate,
When In Doubt-Throw It Out, Cooking for 1 or 2,
Rethink Your Drink, and Planned Leftovers.
4-H Youth
Development: The 4-H Educator developed and conducted 6 Quality Assurance
programs for 348 FFA and 4-H Youth and 8 Senior
Fairboard Livestock Committee members. These educational programs are for youth
livestock exhibitors and address the 10 Good Production Practices. These youth
are producers and must ensure that their animal enters the food chain as a
quality product.
The 4-H Educator
coordinated project related workshops and day camps including: a two day field
trip for the Fairview Kindergarten classes (105 youth) to Camp Palmer; 4-H
Officer and Advisor Training (125 youth and 35 adult volunteers); Cloverbud Day Camp at the Fairgrounds (28 youth); Cake
Decorating Workshop (8 youth); Clothing and Food Project Workshop (22 youth);
Annual Princess Camp (40 girls from second to fifth grade).
Julie Rittenhouse, Defiance County Public Safety Services Director, met
with the Commissioners to discuss the bylaws of the Black Swamp Citizen Corp
Council. Julie explained that in order to continue to receive funding for the
CERT and MRC programs, the County needs to belong to
a regional group. The Black Swamp Citizen Corp Council invited Defiance County
to join. This group consists of Henry, Fulton and Paulding Counties. The
Commissioners approved joining the Black Swamp Citizen Corp Council.
Isaac Lee, Defiance Chamber of Commerce, met with the Commissioners for
an update.
The Commissioners recently received the monthly report from Cecilia
Parsons, Defiance County Recorder. Cecilia reported that during the month of
June, 2012, the total instruments filed were as follows: deeds – 182; mortgages
– 222; other liens – 8; releases – 212; power of attorney – 3; soldiers
discharge – 1; plats – 1. Total receipts were $32,039.50, of which $15,672.00
went to the Housing Trust Fund and $13,915.50 went to the General Fund.
