DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 21, 2010 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Chairman James E. Harris, Jr. called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioners Thomas L. Kime and Otto L. Nicely, Laura Howell, Administrator, Stephanie Metz, Clerk, and Lanie Miller, Deputy Clerk. 

 

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents.  The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

 

Laura Howell, Defiance County Administrator, met with the Commissioners for her weekly report and project updates. Laura provided the following department updates:

Landfill. Tim Houck reported that the facility is again operating two cells – one in Unit 1, Phase 4 and another in Unit 1, Phase 2. Road litter pick up continued with 69 miles traveled last week.

Public Safety.  County fleet inspections will be held on Friday, November 5th. Julie Rittenhouse reported EMA will participate in the Sears Safety Weekend. Participants will be Red Cross, Police, Fire, etc. A display table will be placed in the Sears store on October 23rd & 24th. It will be geared towards Family Safety and Preparedness. We will have CERT and MRC represented. Volunteers will help staff our display.

Maintenance. Ron Cereghin reported that maintenance performed the following at the new Senior Center: poured the rear steps to the basement, poured the base and reset the flag pole, hung several items to get ready for the open house, painted basement walls. They also serviced the courthouse boiler so that it is ready to fire, patched a hole in parking lot at Defiance County East, and removed sand stone steps from the jail project and hauled them to Evergreen Lane Office Complex.

 

Laura reported that all the liming and excavation is done at the Airport Project.  They are starting the stone base October 20th.  This will take around seven days.  At the Grandstand Project, steel beams have been placed and bleacher construction has begun. Aluminum to be delivered October 20th and the press box delivered October 25th.

 

Randy Vogel, Defiance County Dog Warden, met with the Commissioners for an update.  Randy reported during September investigating 130 calls resulting in 27 dogs taken to the shelter, 29 warnings and 27 citations.  There were 3,189 miles driven.  To date there has been $86,793.00 collected in dog & kennel tags compared to $79,988.00 for 2009.

 

Ken Keller, First Insurance & Investments, met with the Commissioners to review health insurance options.

 

The Commissioners attended the Senior Center Open House and the Defiance County Trustees Quarterly Meeting.
