DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2013 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners’ Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Chairman Otto L. Nicely called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioners James E. Harris, Jr. and Thomas L. Kime, Laura Howell, Administrator, Stephanie Metz, Clerk, and Angelica Abels, Deputy Clerk.

 

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents.  The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

 

Laura Howell, Administrator, met with the Board to provide her weekly update with various department and project updates.

 

Tim Houck, Defiance County Environmental Services/Landfill Director, met with the Commissioners for a monthly update. Tim reported $246,111.75 in sales from 8,010 tons and 28,462 cubic yards in March, compared to $290,866.34 in sales, 9,220 tons and 29,578 cubic yards in March 2012. 

 

Tom Taylor of Werlor Recycling/Archbold Refuse Service (ARS), met with the Board for an update. Mr. Taylor thanked the Board for the good working relationship between Defiance County Landfill and his agencies. He stated he will continue to utilize the Defiance County Landfill. The Board thanked Mr. Taylor for his personal and Werlor Recycling and Archbold Refuse Service for continued support of the local communities.

 

Mike Williams, Veterans Commission, met with the Commissioners to review the 2012 Activity Report. The total budget spent in 2012 was $315,121.22. Financial Assistance Expenditures totaled $87,546.14 with 272 Veterans assisted. The total cost of transporting veterans for medical services was $21,903.56. There were 260 veterans transported to DVA Medical Facilities (each time a veteran went is counted). This is a reduction from 293 in 2012. There were 27,525 contacts made. Mike reported that from April 1, 2012 until  December 31, 2012, there were 77 new compensation claims, 22 new pensions, 14 surviving spouse benefits, 184 compensation and pension follow ups, 113 healthcare services, 10 burials and 18 headstones.

 

Mike also informed the Commissioners that the Vietnam Era Veterans of Northwest Ohio is publishing a Yearbook in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War. It will include the photos and military biographies of Veterans’ who served from August 5, 1964 through May 7, 1975. It will include both veterans who served in-country Vietnam and those who served in other countries or the United States during those years listed. The Yearbook is being compiled by the Defiance County Veterans Office in cooperation with the Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Chapter #954 of Northwest Ohio. On June 16, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, Post #3360 of Defiance will be sponsoring “The Healing Field” at Pontiac Park. This event will honor and remember those who Serve, Protect, and heal our nation. Each flag will be tagged with the name of the person or organization that is being honored or remembered. At 6 p.m., the flags will be released at a closing ceremony and you may take your flag home or it will be taken to the Veteran’s Office. All monies collected are being donated to a fund dedicated to hosting the Vietnam Wall Display and Commemoration Ceremony of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War in June 2014 in Defiance. The Commissioners are still reviewing options for the pending vacant Administrator position.
