DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

MONDAY, JULY 8, 2013

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, July 8, 2013 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners’ Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Chairman Otto L. Nicely called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioner Thomas L. Kime, and Stephanie Metz, Clerk.

 

Morris Murray, Defiance County Prosecutor, met with the Commissioners for an update on various pending legal matters.

 

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents. The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.  

 

The Board approved the following three project grant agreements with the Ohio Public Works Commission. These projects will not be completed until 2014.

1.    Banner School Road Widening Project in the amount of $262,996.00. Banner School Road is currently 18' and will be widened to 20' for one mile east of Independence Road and Banner School Road between SR 66 and Carpenter Road is currently 20' and will be widened to 24'.

2.    Hire Road Widening Project in the amount of $166,657.00. Hire Road is currently 20' between SR 281 and Standley Road. It is being widened to recommended width of 24'.

3.    The Bend Road Widening Project in the amount of $274,850.00. The Bend Road is currently 20' between SR 15 and Blosser Road, and will be widened to recommended width of 22' for project length of 9400’.

 

The Board approved a demolition contract with Dennis Panning Excavating for the demolition of a residence at 9938 Independence Road through the Moving Ohio Forward Program.

 

The Commissioners certified the June Solid Waste Disposal Submittal Forms for the Landfill facilities. Defiance Township, as the host government agency received $2,152.15. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) also received $2,891.55 for the construction & demolition debris (C&DD) waste.

 

Ron Cereghin, Defiance County Maintenance Supervisor, met with the Commissioners for an update.

 

Warren Schlatter, Defiance County Engineer, met with the Commissioners for a weekly update. Warren reviewed his Accumulated Revenue Report. The Accumulated Revenue through June 2013 was $2,013,467.12, compared to $2,023,355.81 in June 2012. Warren stated that the road side grading on Banner School Road is completed until after the wheat harvest; the crew has moved to Stever Road. Warren stated that of the 9 miles of roadway planned for road side grading, 4 miles have been completed. The crew is working on widening Fountain Street Road between Openlander Road and Behnfeldt Road.

 

Isaac Lee and Sara Cates, Defiance Chamber of Commerce, met with the Commissioners for a quarterly update. Isaac informed the Board that the Chamber added 36 new members during the second quarter, and lost 14 members. Isaac informed that Board that on Friday, August 2 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., the Defiance Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Member/Community Appreciation day. The Defiance Chamber of Commerce is celebrating 75 years in the Defiance Community.

 

Corey Walker, Defiance County Job & Family Services Director, met with the Commissioners for a monthly update. Corey reported that during April there were 5,182 individuals that received $594,024 in food assistance, compared to $653,476 provided to 5,440 individuals in April 2012.

 

Tina Hiler, Defiance County Senior Services Director, met with the Commissioners for a monthly update. Tina informed the Board that the Annual Old Timers’ Bike Ride had 90 bikes this year, compared to 34 last year. The event was able to raise over $3,000.00 that will be utilized for a new 12 passenger bus.
