DEFIANCE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

MONDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2013

 

The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 7:45 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2013 in the Conference Room in the Commissioners’ Office at 500 Court Street, Suite A, Defiance, Ohio 43512.  Chairman Otto L. Nicely called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioners James E. Harris, Jr. and Thomas L. Kime, Sherry Carnahan, Finance Manager/Administrator, and Stephanie Metz, Clerk.

 

The Committee to Approve Courthouse Plans met to discuss options for utilization of the Courthouse. After much discussion, the Committee unanimously approved proceeding with plans to renovate the Courthouse with some minor layout changes.

 

The Commissioners met in General Session and approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents. The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.  

 

The Commissioners certified the November Solid Waste Disposal Submittal Forms for the Landfill facilities. Defiance Township, as the host government agency received $1,985.21. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) also received $1,253.49 for the construction & demolition debris (C&DD) waste. Monthly (MSW) Disposal fees paid to the Ohio EPA for the Defiance County Landfill was $29,271.72.

 

Elaine Ostrander and Josh O’Hare, Fort Defiance Humane Society, met with the Commissioners for an update and to discuss the 2014 budget. Randy Vogel, Defiance County Dog Warden, was also in attendance. Elaine stated that the 2014 Party in the Park will be held on September 12, 2014. This was their newest event in 2013 with “wonderful support” of the Defiance Moose. There were over 700 people in attendance. They are currently selling 2014 Critter Cards.

 

Warren Schlatter, Defiance County Engineer, met with the Commissioners for a weekly update. 

 

The Commissioners did not hold the meeting with Greg Reinhart, Defiance County Wastewater Operations Director. However, they did receive the Department’s monthly update. There were the following items completed in November: primed the pumps at Paulding County’s Auglaize River Sewer pump stations #5 & #7; cleaned the pump at Christy pump station; changed grinders on Oak Forest Drive and Switzer Road; cleaned the pump at Defiance County’s Auglaize River Sewer pump station #7; installed rebuilt chemical pump at Express Sewer pump station; installed a new belt at Paulding County’s Auglaize River Sewer pump station #8. In November, Greg reported billing out $59,717.14, collecting $51,336.39, and having expenses of $43,003.48.

 

The Commissioners recently received an update from Edwin Gehring, Defiance County Apiary Inspector. Mr. Gehring found a new unregistered commercial beekeeper in the northwest corner of the County. He stated that this added approximately 50 new hives for the County. He stated the beekeeper just moved to the area in the last year or so and has been cooperative in becoming registered. He also added 2-3 other hives. He stated that there is one location still holding residual AFB (American Foulbrood) spores, but they are continuing to eliminate the disease; all other hives containing AFB were destroyed.
