The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2018 in the in the Commissioners’ Session Room at 500 Court Street, Defiance, Ohio 43512. Vice-President Mick Pocratsky called the meeting to order.  Also present were Commissioner Gary Plotts, and Stephanie Metz, Clerk.

 

The Commissioners met in General Session; they approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents. The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.

 

Based on the recommendation of Warren Schlatter, the Commissioners approved a contract with J&A Construction, Inc. for 2018 Crack Seal Project. Warren utilized the state bid process for this.

 

Warren Schlatter, Defiance County Engineer, met with the Commissioners for the bid opening for CR175 Resurfacing. This project is to repave the entire length of Domersville Road; the engineering estimate for the project was $905,619.50. The only bid received was from Gerken Paving, Inc. in the amount of $921,718.56. This project is being fully funded by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

 

Jerry Hayes and Carla Hinkle, Defiance County Economic Development, met with the Commissioners to provide a monthly update. Carla informed the Board that they are still accepting registrations for the Summer Manufacturing Camps. Defiance Middle School is scheduled for July 17-20; Hicksville High School is scheduled for July 24-27. The cost to the students is $50.00, and there are scholarships available. Both camps are open to any students in grades 6-8. There are also volunteers needed for these Camps.

 

Greg Reinhart and Jan Rethmel, Defiance County Wastewater Operations, met with the Commissioners to provide a monthly update.

 

Tanya Brunner, Peter Kennerk, Darcy Lehman, Tom Kent, and Dave Lulfs, Defiance County Veterans Service Commissioner/Veterans Affairs, met with the Commissioners to present the proposed 2018 Budget. Ohio Revised Code requires this to be presented to the Commissioners by the last Monday in May. By law the office must not exceed .5 mils, which equates to $461,290.32 for 2019. The total budget presented is $378,115.33.

 

The Commissioners would like to congratulate Defiance County Amazing Shake Champion Rylen Bassett (Hicksville Middle School), Runner-up Emma Tackett (Defiance Elementary School), and third place winner Lauren Sattler (Tinora Elementary School). Big shout out to all the finalists and participants of the "Amazing Shake" - Defiance County is proud to be the home of such awesome young citizens!
