The Board of Defiance County Commissioners met in regular session at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2018 in the in the Commissionersí Session Room at 500 Court Street, Defiance, Ohio 43512. President Ryan Mack called the meeting to order.† Also present were Commissioner Mick Pocratsky, Sherry Carnahan, Finance Manager/Administrator, and Stephanie Metz, Clerk.
Judge Strausbaugh, Defiance County Probate/Juvenile Court, Chris Palmer, Guardianship Liaison, and Allma Miller, Northwest Ohio CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), met with the Commissioners to review the CASA Program. Ms. Miller explained that Northwest Ohio CASA is primarily grant funded, but there is also funding through fundraising efforts and charitable contributions. Court Appointed Special Advocates for children are volunteers from all walks of life.† By Ohio Revised Code, the Court is required to appoint a Guardian ad Litem to protect the interest of the child in any proceeding concerning an alleged or adjudicated abused or neglected child. This can be either an attorney or a CASA volunteer. The attorneys are paid through County funds; CASA volunteers are unpaid. †Since Defiance County joined the Northwest Ohio CASA, there are now nine trained CASA volunteers. In 2016, the County paid $43,910.82 in Guardian ad Litem fees; in 2017, the cost was $34,277.11. Ms. Miller requested $10,000.00 from Defiance County to be used as a match for grant funds. The Commissioners approved providing Northwest Ohio CASA with $10,000.00
The Commissioners met in General Session; they approved and signed various resolutions, contracts and documents. The Commissioners also reviewed the calendar of events and discussed upcoming meetings.
The Commissioners held the annual ditch maintenance assessment meeting with Paulding County Commissioners and DeKalb County Commissioners. The Joint Board approved the 2019 ditch maintenance assessments for ditches maintained by Defiance County.
