Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event

On November 16th, 2013 North Star BlueScope Steel LLC sponsored a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection day. The event was held on NSBSL’s property from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and was an overall success!

Throughout the day 232 cars and trucks arrived at the event to drop off a variety of hazardous materials.  Citizens came from 10 different counties. In 2012 we collected 25,631 lbs. and this event took in 58,952 lbs. for an increase of 56%. All HHW waste collected was processed and properly disposed. Distributions of the counties are listed below:

*Fulton County = 81%, *Paulding County = 0.9%, *Lucas County = 7.3%, Hudson County = 0.9%, Defiance County = 3.5%, Lenawee County = 0.4%, Henry County = 3.0%, Monroe County = 0.4%, Williams County = 2.2%, and Wood County = 0.4%.

A hearty ‘Thank You’ goes to the sponsors of this event: North Star BlueScope Steel LLC, Lafarge Corporation of Paulding, Defiance College Baseball, and the Four County Solid Waste District (Defiance, Fulton, Paulding and Williams County).

The wastes varied from used oil, 1960’s herbicides, to a small 8 ounce can of mercury.  All of the wastes brought in were hazardous to the community and the environment.  Improper disposal could have caused environmental issues and could have posed a major threat to the health of our communities.  We would like to extend a thank you to everyone who participated in the event.  The great turn out for this event enforces our belief that people are concerned and aware of the benefits to properly dispose of HHW waste. Thank you to all who contributed.
