America Recycles Day 2011

America Recycles Day (ARD), HELD YEARLY on November 15, is an opportunity for communities, organizations and schools to participate in a National recycling day.

Defiance County Environmental Services contacted other County departments to participate in the annual ARD event by recycling all office paper.  Defiance County Environmental Services collected 1770# of shredded and regular office paper from the following participants: Records, Defiance County Commissioners, Dog Warden, Clerk of Courts, Child Support Agency and the Defiance County Prosecutors office.

America Recycles Day (ARD) information was also distributed to local schools. Fairview Elementary Celebrated “AMERICA RECYCLES WEEK” November 14th – 18th.  The theme was “Practice Random Acts of GREENness”.

Fairview elementary students were asked to make TWO bookmarks AT HOME using any recycled material.  ONE bookmark would be traded or swapped at school with other students.  The SECOND book mark would be donated to the local library and displayed for patrons to take and use.  If a student chose to make only one bookmark, they then would decide to participate in the swap or donate to the library.  Handouts with recycled bookmark ideas were distributed to the students.  Bookmark ideas included greeting cards, mail, magazines and cereal boxes.

Fairview students were asked to participate in a book swap where they would have the opportunity to bring in ‘used’ books from their collections at home and receive tickets good for ‘swap’ day.  Students could bring in 1 to 3 books for the swap. Students were given a ticket per book brought in.  Tickets then were exchanged to redeem new books.

The students at Fairview were creative and generous during this week long event.  The school recycled over 500 books and students made over 800 bookmarks to trade and donate.  Fairview Middle School, Fairview High School and the Sherwood Library were recipients of the bookmarks a well.

Students received prizes for participating such as silicone bracelets, stickers and pencils. The event was very successful! The pictures below show the books recycled and the creativity of the bookmarks.
